  1. I've been using virtualdub for years. Typically I have an old stable XP machine for VHS captures - with a reliable AGP video card that has s-video capture capabilities. Today, the desktop decided to crash on me. Typical project - I spend years working hard to build up the ability to do things easily, a task comes my way, and it turns into a series of other things that decide they don't want to work anymore and that I really didn't need any free time anyways. I'm working on my 4th eBay VCR that's in the process of getting damaged in transit as we speak, because the USPS doesn't want us having nice things undamaged, but I'm limping along another trash VCR that seems to work if I open it up and help some of the parts along the way when initially loading a tape.

Anyways, with a crashed desktop that could turn into a quagmire of stacking problems to stabilize again, I've turned my sites to a rather reliable USB s-video capture device I have, and my current Windows 10 desktop. Loaded up virtualdub, went into capture mode, went to the audio settings - no audio devices.

    Really?

    No audio devices?

Well gee, Windows 10 doesn't seem to agree with you, virtualdub. I have tons of audio inputs on this machine.

What gives? When did virtualdub turn to trash? I'm not converting silent movies here. Why isn't virtualdub seeing my numerous soundcards?

  2. Ugh, not only that - I have NO VIDEO SELECTION CONTROLS!

virtualdub on my XP machine, once I select the device, video input lets me select if it's using the composite, s-video, or tv tuner for the input device of the card.

When I select my usb device on this machine - no video input settings. No way to tell it to use the s-video input.

Sure, I probably could work around it and try to trick the device into the mode I need it in, but I shouldn't have to, if programmers would actually do their jobs properly every now and then.

Seems whoever is working on virtualdub left it to rot. Stabbed in the back again. No programmers seem to have any pride in their work anymore.

What are people using for lossless VHS capture these days?

Also - the capture software will need to have the flexibility to let me select a different device for audio, capture uncompressed pcm audio in stereo 16 bit 48 kHz.

Have you looked at Windows 10/settings/privacy - microphone/camera to see if apps have access to your devices ?

  4. Have you tried with other softwares ? I suggest virtualvcr. (I still use to this day, going back my XP years). Though if you have many audio inputs i guess it can be troublesome. Wild guess : driver issue or cable(s) impedance problems. Try a reboot without cables hooked up
