I'm trying to capture my Digital8 tapes with WinDV. Everything seemed to be going well for 20 minutes then it froze. I have tried a number of times now and all it will do when I press capture is show 1 frame then freeze. I'm capturing to a separate drive from the OS. I'm not sure why I can't even get it to play now when previously it recorded 20 minutes? The screenshots bottom line of text shows "Paused... Press <Capture> but when I press capture nothing happens even though the tape is still running. My max AVI size was 150000 so I increased it to 750000 but it didn't alter anything. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks.

Sorry forgot to mention I'm using Windows 7 and a Firewire cable.

Try Scenalyzer; it seems to be a little more resilient than WinDV (although on Win 7 you should be OK with DV capture; Win 10 needs work to install the correct drivers).
I have a Scenalyzer guide here:

It's a little more complicated than WinDV but does the job. -
I've finally been able to capture my Digital8 tape but only when I checked the box between config and capture. I've read that you shouldn't do this with "live captures" I'm not sure wat that means? So I'm not sure if this is correct way to move forward for me? Thanks.

Have a look at the WinDV website; it looks like is to enable camera control (wave your mouse pointer over the WinDV image on the web page for tips). I think that means when you hit Capture, WinDV will start the camera playing.
The main thing is that you are getting a capture/transfer. If the captured file looks and sounds good on the PC, then you're good to go. Digital is either "on" or off", you'll get exactly what is on the tape. -
Thanks Alwyn. The WinDV interactive was informative I looked at it previously but didn't think to look at for information when I was struggling! I think the problem I had/have was that it didn't recognize my camcorder, the camcorder icon seemed to disappear on the computers devices then re-appear. I'm hoping it's ok now. If not I will try some other drivers hoping that I can find a solution.

I seem to have sorted out some of the issues I'm having with windv, but at least I can transfer a digital8 tape completely now. The issue I'm having now is that it doesn't turn off automatically at the end of the Digital8 tape, the last frame is displayed until I press cancel. The complete video seems good, however I get the following message in window media player once the video has reached the end. I have tried both starting the camcorder first and then pressing capture on windv and I have also tried the other way around. Out of desperation I even checked the box between config & capture but this didn't result in it turning off automatically either(I know this creates an audio issue anyway) I have also checked that I have the legacy driver. Strangely if I press cancel before the end I don't get the error message. So my question is, is the error message a problem and why doesn't the video turn off? My Digital8 tapes have only been recorded on once so there shouldn't be a timecode error. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
