I am using AviUtil now. It works but is tedious. For one, there is no ability to cross-fade audio. I do need the multiple layers it has. I mostly only do simple edits. Cut-n-paste, cross-fade and fade-to-black. When I try to split the audio from the video, it never gets the timings right.
Is one of the free ones on here better now?

KdenLive is open source and free.. and it's a great software for multitrack audio (and video) editing. It's very easy to cross-fade (in/out) video and audio tracks directly from the timeline.. in a "visual way", simply dragging up and down some "points" where every fade should start/end. And if you need more advanced editing there is a lot more the software offers you.. Kden is quite more powerful and versatile than its ..cousin.. "Shotcut".
