    Hi,

    How can I improve visual quality of Dissolve transitions between still images with libx264 in FFmpeg? It's not bad, but I can see artefacts of a compression.
    Also banding may appear on a gradient of a blue sky.

    I use the following options: -refs 4 -bf 3 -g 250 -crf 22

    So it is a slideshow?
    I recommend 0 b-frames and a short gop (maximum = 5 seconds). Also, 10-bits instead of 8-bits.
    There exist some custom builds of x264 which use the famous "fade compensation patch", you might want to give them a try.
