  1. Hi. I've just bought a DVD of a 2009 concert by a German singer. It would be logical to expect such a DVD to be 'progessive', wouldn't it?

According to mediainfo, it's interlaced and DGIndex says that too. During the scan, DGIndex kept throwing me a warning about 'caught an exception' (see pic). What does that mean exactly?

The DVD has 'protection' on it but my version of Handbrake has an extra plugin to get round that. I made a made a small clip using Handbrake and, according to mediainfo, it's progressive. My thinking is that the copyright protection is fooling mediainfo and DGIndex in some way and that the DVD is, in fact, progressive.

Have you any other thoughts? I want to have a back-up of this DVD and would like it to be 'right'...

    Thank you.

Just rip(copy) the entire disc to your hard drive with a real decrypter.

It has nothing to do with copy protection. Virtually all PAL DVDs are encoded as interlaced and that's what MediaInfo and DGIndex are reporting (correctly). The content might be interlaced, or progressive, or a mix. One way to tell what you have is to make the D2V file and open an unfiltered AviSynth script in VDub, scroll to a place with movement, and then advance a frame at a time. If you don't see any interlacing then it's not interlaced.

As hech54 said, decrypt it properly. I wasn't quite clear on how you did decrypt it but I wouldn't think Handbrake should be used for that.

  4. Thank you, both. I've installed DVD Decrypter and used it to make a single VOB of my DVD. To make the D2V file, I used MEGUI which also allowed me to go through it frame by frame so there was no need for avidemux.

As it's concert footage, there's not much in the way of 'car chase' style movement but I think this snap confirms the DVD to be interlaced!

I didn't know that virtually all PAL DVDs are encoded as interlaced. I just assumed that progressive, being a 'true' image, would be used by modern production companies.

    Thanks again.
