I'm either having a blonde moment or something thas gone wrong with my VD install.
Using current ver 1.20.4 32bit on a w7 64bit machine
I have installed a lot of different codec
XVID, HUFFY, Lagarith , HQX, ffdshow etc
Yet when I drop a simple DV.avi file onto VD ( ..... full processing mode selected) ... when I look under codecs all I see are:
When I look under Windows msinfo I see them installed:
also attach mediainfo for file in case I have done something stupid

Virtualdub is a stand alone portable program, so it's not actually installed.
It should be simple enough to download again and open a new version, if necessary. (I take it you meant to write '1.10.4' and not '1.20.4' as the current stable version?)
You would need to update your 'plugins' folder though, if you've added any more to it in the past?....
There is a small free utility from HERE that will check out the codecs you have on your machine, and whether they are functioning OK
It's pretty old, but it seems to work OK an Windows 7. Like Vdub, it's a portable application, so no need to install... just download and open.. -
I have downloaded new copy of VD ........... still the same .....
The Utility confuses me even more.. (files attached)
It seems to confirm that for example the one we discussed separately Grass Valley HQX is installed ...... but not listed in VD
I have just downloaded again .... Cedocia, HQX, Lagartith & Huffy .... all finish install without errors .. and show under Window codec check.
And all codecs that I have used in VD in the past
But still don't show in VD ?
I Googled and found some information that VD needs quartz.dll to be able to use codecs ... I tried deregister & register of quartz ... but I get error:
Any suggestions ... or do I need to remove all traces of VD clean registry and start again .... -
Some things you should be aware of:
Under Windows there are two different video systems: VFW and DirectShow. Programs are usually written to use one or the other. VirtualDub uses VFW and hence requires VFW codecs.
Under 64 bit Windows there are both 32 bit and 64 bit video systems. The two environments cannot see each others' codecs. So 64 bit programs require 64 bit codecs, 32 bit codecs require 32 bit codecs.
So under 64 bit Windows there are four video subsystems:
Code:64 bit VFW 64 bit Directshow 32 bit VFW 32 bit Directshow
-
I did download & reinstaĺl both 32bit and 64bit VFW
It did give a msg about you may need to configure ...under config modules codecs are showing as in use (not disabled)
I can't download directshow to reinstall as a its a core windows item.Last edited by Tafflad; 7th Feb 2016 at 07:17.

As safe step - and to rule out VD files as corrupt ......... removed VD
Ran registry cleaner to remove traces of VD
Downloaded new 32 bit version.
Tried again - same .... the newly downloaded codecs do not show.
They do show in msinfo -
Jagabo correctly pointed out that VirtualDub uses VFW codecs and your msinfo shows that the video uses DV codec (DSVD) Make sure under FFDshow VFW (green icon) configuration that DV is not disabled.
This will allow you to VIEW the video but if you want to ENCODE with DVSD then make sure FFDshow ENCODER is set to that codec in VFW codecs and select it in Virtualdub and configure in ffdshow.

The error code in your post possibly suggests a 'permissions' error. The thread HERE is for Vista, but the principle should still apply (there is a Win7 reference in a post near the end). I don't think your installed VFW codecs will appear in Vdub unless there is a registered version of Quartz.dll installed?....

Normally Windows has a built in VFW DV decoder in quartz.dll. Download and install Cedocida if you want to encode DV in VirtualDub. I think it installs both 32 and 64 bit versions (if 64 bit Windows) now.
Do not install Panasonic DV codec. It's full of bugs and only outputs RGB.Last edited by jagabo; 7th Feb 2016 at 08:07.

OK ... ref post #7 DV was 'disabled' fixed that .... but no change still codecs not showing.
This is so frustrating as it previously all worked fine.
I have just to be sure reinstalled 32bit Cedocia 'after' enabling DV ... but still no change.
Neither Cedocia nor HQX appear in the list.
Anything else need enabling in VFW ... it currently shows:
-
I did install that in past couple of weeks ... I wonder if that caused the problem ... it was on advice given on Doom9 forum
I installed PANADV codec http://www.free-codecs.com/download/panasonic_dv_codec.htm
Is there a way to neatly remove this ? -
If I remember correctly Panasonic DV codec is only available in a 32 bit version. Are you running 32 bit VirtualDub? If you're running 64 bit VirtualDub it will not see any 32 bit codecs.
But it does sound like your system is screwed up (and probably not specific to VirtualDub). Does Cedocida show up in the Uninstall Programs dialog? Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Panasonic DV should show up there too. Can you uninstall it?Last edited by jagabo; 7th Feb 2016 at 08:59.

Did you manage to sort out your Quartz.dll issue?....Last edited by pippas; 7th Feb 2016 at 11:29.

I have only 32bit VD installed
All codec where was a choice were installed as 32bit
Cedocia does show in Unistall programs 32 and 64 bit
Grass Vallay codec also shows there
Xvid
Huffy
X24vfw
Yet in VD they do not show.
I just did a full removal of the above codecs and reinstalled again ..... exactly the same. -
Here is attached list of codecs from NIRSOFT report for my PC ..... seems to show all codecs are present.
Not sure if things are correct ........ Lagarith downloaded from this site gives no choice of 32 bit or 64 bit ....
It has installed in sytem32 so would that work with 32 bit VD ?
I have also downloaded Huffy from this site ... the 32bit version.
I right click on .inf file to install ..... a very fast popup window appears & disappears (too fast to read) but no error
Neither of these show as being installed in SysWow64 ??
Huffy does not show at all (unless it is know by other name)Last edited by Tafflad; 7th Feb 2016 at 15:33.

This is where I get lost .... I downloaded Cedocia from this site ... there is only one link ... no 32 or 64 bit version.
There are instructions .. and they say explicity:
"For installing Cedocida DV, DVCPRO25 and DVCPRO50 Codec (caution: your current installed DV/DVCPRO25/DVCPRO50 codecs will be replaced):
==> right click on "cedocida.inf" and select install"
That is exactly what I did.
I went and checked and there is a cedocida.dll in both system32 and SysWOW64 so it has installed in both
you can see file here is SysWOW64:
Lagarith again downloaded file from here .. a single file option, no 32 or 64 bit.
It arrive as an exe and when you run it it installs with no options where to put it.
Again it shows in SysWOW64 where you advise it should be:
So I'm lost here when you say they need to go in SysWOW64 .... there is no choice where to put them during install, and in any event that is where they are.
I haven't checked the others .. but will do if you want. -
Fixed it .... well so far looks like it.
Using the Nirsoft Installed Codec tool, I could simply disable & re-enable codecs without resorting to regedit.
There was a post on Doom9 I was pointed to for a similar issue and they found that vidc codecs were to blame.
I disabled all the vidc codecs and .... success all the expected codecs reappeared in VD.
(so they must have been installed correctly after all)
By a process of elimination found out that it was codec VIDC.RTV1 as soon as I disabled that .. all is fine (so far at least)
I have an MSI graphics card and this is an MSI afteburner codec, maybe it is faulty or it got installed it an update.
Now VD shows:
Thanks for suggestions here they all helped with getting there.Last edited by Tafflad; 7th Feb 2016 at 17:27.
