  1. Hello!

Need help please! I am trying to put together a slide show of misc. photos and videos from before 2005. I have a MAC that is slow (Macbook from 2008, OSX 10.9.4) or a Windows Vista that I can use. The issue I'm having is trying to cut out sections of DVD video (VOB files, but I also see .IFO and .BUP in the folder) that were converted from VHS. I tried using DVD Shrink but it wouldn't recognize and therefore open the DVD. iMovie also wouldn't recognize the files. Next I tried using the "record" function of the VLC player, which worked well to cut and convert the video to mpg, however it is splicing the video and audio and therefore only giving me the sections I want with no sound.

Any suggestions on how to do this more efficiently and get the clips I want with sound? Do I need to convert the CD/DVDs into another format first and then edit after? I would definitely consider downloading some software, preferably free since i'm poorish. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I planned to use iMovie once I have all the clips and photos together. Perhaps there is a better program I can use?

    Thanks in advance!!

If DVDShrink couldn't open them, the structure of the DVD's might be off. You could try running them through FixVTS first, before trying to use DVDShrink. I'm assuming you're familiar with Shrink and its ability to cut sections out, otherwise there is no point in trying to use it.

You could also try using Vob2Mpg, or DVDVob2Mpg to combine all the vob files and produce one mpeg file from them first, before cutting out clips you want. To cut sections of mpeg2, I normally use VideoReDo TV Suite, which is a commercial product, but has a fully functional trial period, which would probably be enough for you. Some of the other members here will have other suggestions for cutting tools, I'm sure.
