Got a 1080p30 clip taken from a Nikon D5300 I need to incorporate in a project.

Loaded it in Premiere Pro and get raised black levels and clipped whites and color is off.

    Code:
    ...
    Color primaries : BT.709
    Matrix coefficients : BT.601
    Color range : Full
    colour_primaries_Original : BT.709
    transfer_characteristics_Original : BT.470 System M
    matrix_coefficients_Original : BT.601
    ...
What's going on? Is this normal from those cameras?

(sorry not at liberty to share any footage)

Your source has color matrix BT.601 and Premiere thinks it is BT.709. This is typical for DSLR.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

What is the rationale for using BT.601 for HD sources?

There must be some 'sane' explanation?

    {although I won't hold my breath}

Since this situation is apparently common, would you say it is likely that this thread is a stalking horse?

    What's a "Stalking Horse"?

  6. I know that mobile phones use variable Framerates which cannot be played smooth on a TV/monitor even with right frame rate. Tried that by myself.
What happens to that video if I watch it? Wrong colors? If so, what kind?

It is a false pretext intended to conceal someone's true purpose.

Hmmm...So you suspect bullashitta? A lot of people don't know the colorspace is different.
