Hey all, I am currently using a Hauppauge 950q usb tuner along with WinTV's Extend software to stream my cable to my phone/tablet. I am mainly using it to watch baseball, as MLB.tv blackout makes my local team unstreamable. This has worked great for years, except now my cable company has stopped using NTSC analog, and therefore I cannot stream it directly from this tuner. So I'm looking for a tuner/capture card with either HDMI or component that is capable of three things: streaming HD video, bandwidth selection, and a IR blaster to change the channels on my cable box.

Now, I realize that the easiest way is to just get a slingbox, but I think they are way overpriced and you have to also buy the app to stream to. Being familiar with Hauppauge's products, it seems their HD PVR 2 might do the job, but I'm not sure if it will change the channel on my cable box through the Extend streaming software. I know it will change the channel through the actual computer software, but not sure if it will do it remotely through the Extend software.

So my other question is, is there any other products, not slingbox, that will do what I want to do? I know this question is a little vague, and I know I could search and find out, but it just seems to be a lot of products out there that will do similar things, but not everything I need. So I figured I would ask here for any recommendations. Thanks

You might also look at the HD Homerun Prime CableCARD tuner to see if it will meet your needs. The lowest price I could find at the moment is $124 at Newegg, but I have seen them on sale there for $100 at times. You will need to rent an M-Card CableCARD and possibly a Tuning Adapter from your provider to use it. See https://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/prime/ for more information about what devices and operating systems are supported and apps for them. Some people do get it working with Plex, although I'm not sure that Plex can stream channels that are not copy-freely. Lon Seidman has uploaded several good videos about the HD Homerun Prime to YouTube. This one is about using Plex with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig7QmyTgKGM

I have been using a HD Homerun Prime for a few weeks and it works pretty well, although I haven't tried it with anything other than a Windows PC. I don't own a smartphone or tablet. With the HD Homerun Prime connected to my router, it is possible to stream any channel over my home network. Although the HD Homerun View software for PCs work best with a wired connection, I have tried using it to watch with a wireless network connection on a PC. That does work to some extent, but my wireless connection is not quite good enough. I can watch for a while, but eventually the signal is interrupted and the HDHomerun View app shuts down. I have seen some reviews indicating wireless streaming does work for some people.

I never tried WinTV Extend when I still used a Hauppauge Colossus with a cable box for recording TV, so I can't help you with that question.

Yeah, I actually have Hauppauge's version of that cablecard tuner on my main pc. The problem is, Hauppauge's Extend streaming software does not work with it, as all of those channels are encoded. If I were to use a component output of my cable box, the cable box does not send the encryption over the component cables. And with the Homerun, it only allows you to stream sd channels.
