Hello,
I have read through some older threads regarding the splitting, trimming, and joining of mts camcorder files and I have to say I am thoroughly confused.
Q1. Is it less grief overall to convert the mts files to another type before attempting any editing ?
Q2. If so which type will avoid or minimize re-encoding / quality loss ?
Q3. If not, then can someone recommend a freeware that can handle mts well ?

1. You will lose quality by reconverting. If you are not converting to a lossless format but it will be HUGE so you must shrink/reconvert it again.
3. You could split and join lossless with tsmuxer (write time codes, no video preview), avidemux (it will crash), TSSNiper (may not support all mts files), Free Video Editor (adware).
But if you are going trim lots of mts lossless then get/buy good editor like videoredo h264 suite, tmpgenc smart renderer, solveigmm video splitter. Try trials first! -
Could you give an example of a lossless format that I could experiment with ?
I will try these to see if any of them can do what I need.
I don't mind trying new software. The hassle is cleaning it out of your hard drive. It usually means doing a disk image before install and then a restore afterwards when you realize that it is not going to be a happy marriage.
