Recommended Vidcoder settings?

I'd like to make DVD rips into x264/MKV, and Blu-ray rips into 720p or 1080p MKV as well, depending on how much I like the movie.

Are there good generic recommended settings that work well? Playability on hardware streamers like Dune, PCH, WDTV Live and the like are important.

I just use the high profile and sometimes decreases the Constant Quality value a bit(default 20, lower for better quality but bigger file size).

I convert all my DVDs to MKV. (H.264 with 5.1 AC3) I created a custom profile, leaving most everything at default, except:

Constant quality 19.5.This gives me ~2GB file with good quality.

Audio to AC3 and check 'Passthrough if possible'. Sample rate same as source.

Video filters: Detelecine and Decomb to 'Default', all others off. H.264 Constant framerate and framerate 'Same as source'.
I haven't found any reason to mess with most of the default settings as the quality is good.

For Blu-rays I use RipBot, never VidCoder.

My PC in my Computer Details does DVD to MKV conversions directly from disc in about 15 minutes. AnyDVD used for decryption of my DVDs.

EDIT: I forgot to add that my WDTV plays all my MKVs, as does my Samsung BD set top player. For BD>MKV conversions I use RipBot, 2 pass, with a set size of 7900MB with AC3 surround audio. That size allows me to put three BD conversions on a 24GB BD data disc for archival backup.

I typically choose High Profile, x264 preset on slow, CRF 18 (which looks almost transparent to the source for me), and keep the AC3 5.1 track, or convert lossless to AC3 5.1 at 640kbps.

There really are no 'recommended' settings, you just kind of see what other people do and adjust it to your liking/preferences.

Why is that? Or why not use Ripbot for DVD's as well?

I've used RipBot for quite a long time, even before I tried VidCoder. I guess I'm just used to it. And it works very well for me.

VidCoder works well for my DVD conversions. But with a DVD, I'm only reducing the size from ~7GB to ~2GB.
With RipBot, I'm reducing the size from ~40GB to 8GB. This takes about 2 -3 hours. But the quality looks good on my video projection screen.

I do use VidCoder for converting BD extras to MKV on occasion. But those are generally DVD resolution and stereo sound, so not as important to me as a BD main movie conversion.

When I find programs that work well for me and do what I want, I stick with them.

The most important is advanced tab, and it doesnt change at all during the years. Be aware not to commpress to 10bit. And use constant frame rate on video tab. I personally maybe do higher subme instead of 7 to 9 or higher. And adaptive direct mode to automatic.

There is everything explained in program if you hower with mouse over command.
There is preview too, so if you are not satisfied with settings, you can change them, with not much time lost.

It took quite a long time to process this video, about 10 hours for a 2:27 hours video, 1080p.

Is that so or can I cut that time a bit?

Where do you choose to process 10bit? Just to know how to not to.

As I reduce HD files to fit on one DVD-DL disc, I have to sacrifice in bitrate.

But I wonder what others can influence quality versus processing time.

It is in option string. You neednt worry to do it by mistake.
Maybe lower Subme to faster processing time (Subpixel motion estimation) to 6, but higher is better.
