I have downloaded a number of files (avi) from the same source, they are all DVDrips. I can convert a few of them with TMPGEnc (latest version) but most of them come up with a "file not supported error". I have changed the environment settings as suggested, but still no luck. I am able to view all these files with Windows Media Player, so I don't think it is a codec problem - any suggestions?

try reinstalling the codecs, if that doesn't work you can always use the FlaskMpg encoder, it takes longer but it will do anything that I have came across that TmpgEnc couldn't do. When I run into problems, I don't spend a whole lot of time on them. Flask usually takes care of them. I do like TmpgEnc better though.

Try playing around with the VFAPI priorities under the Environmental Settings (Option Menu) of TMPGEnc. That sometimes helps it correctly read a file.

I had the same problem. I just downloaded an older version (you can find an older version under tools on this page)

I updated to DirectX 8.0a and it ended all my format problems. QuickTime, AVI, etc... they're all working.
