Haven't converted, ripped, or anything for quite awhile, so when I got the new notebook, I never even reinstalled all that stuff.
However, I recorded a tv program that I want to rip & extract a part with just one song on it & make it into an mp3.
So, I ripped it with dvd decryptor to ifo & then avi2dvd, at which point I tried to put it into tmpgenc to cut out the small part that I want.
I tried to do it on my old faithful desktop, & got the error msg from the subj line above.
Now, I have gotten that periodically, but always been able to open it on the old notebook then. One of them always took everything.
So, reinstalled everything on the notebook, ripped it again, with dvd decrypter & dvd2avi, using both save projects, new & old, & same thing on notebook.
So, I'm figuring codecs, so started adding them, & actually got it to load the video, but then it wouldn't load the audio.
Tried one last codec, k-lite, which uninstalled everything I'd previously installed & installed itself, & now it won't do video either. Using XP
Aaaaaakkk! Help!

Another victim of K-lite.
You will find it's much harder to uninstall and clean up the mess it may have made of your codecs than it was to install. But Codec Sniper may help.
And when TMPGEnc gives you that error in the future, take that file and drop it into Gspot 2.70 and find out if you are missing a needed codec, audio or video. Then just install that one.For example, WindowsXP doesn't include a MPEG-2 codec, unless you have installed one. Without it, no DVDs will play. And TMPGEnc encoder doesn't like MP3 VBR audio or sometimes AC3 audio.
Also for TMPGEnc, you may have to raise the VFAPI priority for it to recognize a file. This may give you some info on that if you scroll down the page a bit: http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/convert/tmpgenc/tmpgenc.htm
TMPGEnc doesn't give very clear error messages, so sometimes it's just a guess what the problem really is. -
You don't need tmpg for anything.
at all.
1.rip.
2.demux audio, with pgcdemux by single cell probably being the best solution,
or just all of it. can use dgindex to demux audio too.
3.convert ac3 to pcm. with headac3he or ac3tool, or whatever.
4. edit, snip audio with audio editor. audacity?
5. encode to mp3. lame.

I have done this many times when cutting out portions of a movie, and they are not ancient tools, especially when they have worked numerous times before.
I know that d2v is from dvd2avi & is not audio, there is an audio file that you load separately, & yes they do work.
I'm positive it's just a setting or codec, & don't want to start over with more software that I have to load & learn.

they do work, but they are ancient,
and they are the wrong tools.

If you provided info about what you were actually trying to import, like info from gspot or something.

To import dvd2avi d2v project files into tmpg, make a copy of dvd2avi.vfp into the same folder as the tmpgenc executable.
As for audio i assume ac3. because it's the standard for dvd and because tmpg will throw up the error you received when you try and import it without the tmpgenc ac3 sound plug-in.
Get plug-in or convert audio to uncompressed pcm.
