I'm remastering some of my old favorite music, and even back in the 80's synthesizers played a prominent role. What's surprising is that the little parts that come together to make the whole, sound dorky by themselves.
Example:http://files.videohelp.com/u/135518/TalkTalk%20Edit.wav. The first part is me overdubbing five MiDi notes on a keyboard, then mixing into the original.
It's just like compositing in video or PhoShop.

Even back in the 80's??? I thought the 80's was the synthesizer decade.
New wave, electric pop, or whatever it was called at any given time.....
Gary Newman, The Cars, Ultruvox, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Frankie Goes To Hollywood...... etc, etc....
Were there many non-synthesizer bands in the 80s? -
Yeah, but I didn't realize how pervasive they were. I only remember the old midi didn't sound so hot, like it does today. I used to think midi music was only good for video games, like Space Invaders.
There were still real bands around, like Fleetwood Mac.
