  1. Hi, guys. Can anyone tell me if virtualdub can do simple effects like overlaying a text over video. For example when the movie plays it can display text like 'My movie' over the video and then fade out or just remove itself after a certain time. Nothing fancy like WindowsMovieMaker just simple text is fine. I would stick with WMM except it reencodes the video and pretty much ruins the quality, virtualdub's direct stream copy is a godsend in this regard since I need to do simple cutting and joining as well.

I just started using virtualdub today and since I just need to do simple editing without quality loss it suits me perfectly but being able to overlay info over my movie as it plays would cinch it. If not, then what paid software is best for lossless video editing and also be able to do effects and stuff? Might consider paying for software if it meets my requirements. Ehhh....as long as its not too steep of course.

If virtualdub can do this then pls point me to a tutorial or something, I can take it from there.

    Cheers.

    1. Overlaying text over video is so simple, I doubt it should even be called FX.
    2. However, it is MODIFYING the frame. Any time you do that, you MUST reencode.
    3. While I am confident there are both text and general video overlay filters for Vdub, a better option might be doing the overlay in AVISynth.

You won't be using Direct Stream Copy if you're adding text to the video.

One way to accomplish that is to create a subtitle with your text and hardcode it into the video using the TextSub.vdf for VDub.

'Effects and stuff' require reencoding, at least for the 'effects and stuff' parts. That's called 'smart rendering' and VDub can do it. It'll leave the rest untouched.

  4. Well I probably should have mentioned that the video in question is an MSI afterburner recording. The codec wont let me do much with virtual dub. So I decided to try corel videostudio from this thread: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/348519-Editing-Afterburner-h264-AVIs-what-program. Works perfectly, it lets me do all the fancy stuff and still maintain the quality of the original video but am I really gonna pay $60 for some extra effects? It kinda ok price wise(not much more expensive than a regular game) but its still money better spent elsewhere.

I'll stick with vdub for now cause it lets me trim scenes and join without much issue and the other stuff is superfluous anyway. Thanks for the replies.

    Cheers.
