ripping software off of DVD?

Hi there, I'm a newbie so please excuse my [what may seem like] really elementary and stupid questions. I'm planning to buy a language learning software pack that contains several DVDs and CDs but because my Mac Air doesn't come with a DVD drive [I have an external one that I plug in] I would like to be able to rip the DVDs onto my computer and then use the software whenever I want to without having to lug around my external DVD drive.

I haven't bought the software yet and I'm not sure of its technical specifications but do you think that it might be protected? Do you think I'll run into problems attempting to rip it? Is there a difference between ripping language software and regular movie DVDs? Would DVDFab be able to do the job?


I don't want to purchase something that I won't be able to use at my convenience....Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, there is a huge difference between software and movie dvds. So I'm moving you to our computer section.

I'd say it depends upon the software. You might be able to install it from disc images on the Mac, but not knowing what the software is, exactly (Rosetta Stone?), I couldn't say. It might have anti-copying measures in place to disallow installing or running from anything other than the install discs.

The manufacturer's website might have some relevant information/procedures, if it's possible - though you may also want to try asking about it on a more dedicated Mac forum, like http://hintsforums.macworld.com/ (for example).

I have heard that Rosetta Stone is copy protected. I don't have it so I can't say for sure.

To get any real helpful advice we would need to know exactly what is on these dvd's/cd's.

Like the files on them, not what they are for.
