  1. Just started looking for ripping software. Many reviews are from 2008. Wondering what are the choices today.

    1. decryption
    2. title/menu selection (remove warning, commercial, etc)
    3. compression control

    Any recommendation?

    Thanks!

Do you want to rip the disc to your HDD or convert it to something else like Xvid?

  3. I have 2 use cases. One is DVD to DVD. The other is DVD to AVI.

DVDFab and AnyDVD are the two best choices for decryption.

DVDFab can also convert to avi if you buy that section of the program, but I wouldn't really recommend it. AviDemux, AutoGK, Xvid4PSP....there are a lot of choices for that.

Any particular reason to go to avi, rather than mp4 or mkv?

  5. No. I guess I just don't know better.

I am trying CloneDVD2 which is from the same company who makes AnyDVD. Not sure what they are different but the interface to choose specific track is quite good to remove commercials.

The reason I asked was because there is a third choice for decryption if you want to make .mkv files from your dvds. That program is called MakeMKV and it can decrypt both blu ray and commercially made dvds. Output from dvds is always an .mkv file encoded to h264 (as far as I am aware), but it does also seem to allow full backups of blu ray to the hard drive, minus only the encryption. MakeMKV is free to use for dvds and while it is in beta, is free to use for blu ray. You can get new beta keys for the program at their forum.

MakeMKV will let allow you to select the sections of the movie you wish to keep, so you can remove foreign language tracks, extraneous subtitles, etc.

an alternative to makemkv is to rip with dvdfab or anydvd and then use ripbot264. It has a mkv output an mp4 as well. Plus divx hd and avchd in the newest format. (but as far as i know ripbot264 doesn't work off an optical disc, it needs to be on the harddrive - but its usually best to convert off a harddrive for much faster access and to save wear and tear on your optical disc drive).

DVDFab is my choice - I finally bought the full version - the updates for the free one are behind, so ripping a late release can be problematic.
