I recently bought a Rode VideoMic, the old version, and wanted to use it with the Rode Recording App on my iPhone5. No easy task with the standard fare of adapters out there.

Then I stumbled on this "iRig HD" device that's pretty cool. Also it's a USB audio interface, and I need that because my laptop doesn't have a line in to the sound card, only the built in mic for the web cam.

This device is expensive ($100), but turns your phone into a high end field recorder. You can attach a lav mic, guitar, whatever. The Rode Recording App is nine bucks, but it's VERY good. You get all the bells and whistles.

And there's a nice fat gain wheel on the device so you can adjust gain without looking at anything.

Also, you can play your electric guitar into earbuds while standing on the corner waiting for the bus. Or connect to a Big Jambox. No BlueTooth though. It's a very versatile device. I love it.

What makes this device stand out is it has the Apple lightning plug, so you can still use the headphone jack to monitor.

This is a genuine heads up, I don't shill for anybody. I believe value is judged by robustness, versatility, and the ability to integrate with and extend existing equipment. I can't afford to junk or waste anything. That's why I started out in this expensive hobby with $100 camcorders like the Flip and Kodak.

When I got burned on the Lumix FZ35, that was my wakeup call. They advertised 60p video on the box but it turned out to be simple 30p frame repeating. And the way they obscured it in the manual was despicable.

Synopsis: I'm recommending this iRig as a way to move ahead with current trends and bringing your older but still good equipment along the way, not necessarily as a first line approach, but more as an adjunct.
