    solved.. see post # 2.

after an unknown system shutdown, (from some keystroke combination) i ended up shutting down my pc the hard way, from the psu switch. anyway, ever since, i noticed some things aren't the same. i've done this many times and had no problems, but for some reason, this time, a side-effect occured. so, i no longer have the sound (speaker) icon in my tray.

i have no clue how to get it back down there. its one of the first things i open each day, throughout.

    [XP]

Control Panel => Sounds and Audio Devices => Volume =>

=> Place volume icon in the taskbar

Anyway, I prefer to keep the damn icon turned OFF, since it often made the audio drivers be unloaded , thus forcing me to reboot the machine. I just run sndvol32.exe whenever needed, and that's fine for me
OTOH, now the stupid Adobe Flash Player does the job of the old volume icon in the systray ( i.e., randomly unload the audio drivers after a pause or stop )

    Windows 7:
    From Willie 5 at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-pictures/volume-icon-do...f-1a63cfbd8517

Right click in the task bar near the time display and you will get a pop up
    menu.
    Click on properties.
Under system icons to always show, check
    volume.
    Click Apply.

Also, if you don't want inactive icons to be hidden, make sure that box is not checked.
Also this problem is intermittent on computers with auto logon and errors that are being posted such as "Cannot connect to Network Drive", etc. It also occurs a lot if you have a loaded system and sign on immediately. Apparently its a short time out in a Windows DLL.

When I have missing icons due to this I either wait to logon a few seconds or do the following when I see missing icons:

    1. Open Task Manager: click on Start > click on Run > type: taskmgr
    2. Click on the Processes tab.
    3. Click on explorer.exe in the image name column.
    4. Click on the End Process button.
    5. Confirm Yes to kill the process. This will close the desktop except for Task Manager.
    6. In Task Manager select the File menu command.
    7. Click on the Create New Task button.
    8. In the Open box type: explorer
    9. Click OK.

    Works for me.

ty, the xp version worked. i never thought to look there. see post # 2 for the very simple solution.

and, while there, (in control panel) i found out another issue i was having, to turn off certain software updates for divx.
