  1. Hey, my friends and I were recording a 'Let's play' of a videogame. We got carried away, and ended up recording a 4 GB mp4. The file appears to have an intact header and end, or at least it is similar to other videos he has recorded. However, it seems the file is too large for computer consumption, as even my hex editor couldn't open the entire thing. Is there a way to cut the video down to useable portions? We don't want to have to rerecord the video if we don't have to.

4gb isn't very large. Try using mediainfo on the file. Use its text mode to copy/paste the results here.

  3. Here are the results:
    General
    Complete name : E:\Let's play\00009.mp4
    Format : MPEG-4
    Format profile : Base Media
    Codec ID : isom
    File size : 4.00 GiB

... it looks like the header is gone. Is there any way to recover it? I have a sample video under the same settings, but the length is obviously different.

So you can't play it or?

You can try cut it with for example mymp4boxgui, add the mp4 and cut it under SPLIT.

Actually it looks like the video header was damaged and/or is gone. Does anyone know of any way to repair this?

I'm not saying that you don't have a problem with the header, but if your computer is not using the NTFS file system and it runs Windows, 4 GB could indeed simply be too big for it to handle.

How about a hex dump of the first couple hundred characters?

Well, this hex-to-ascii translation tells me:
    Code:
     ftyp
    isom
    isom
    iso2
    avc1
    mp41

That it's an mp4 file with AVC video. Doesn't look like too much of the header is missing (I added a few line returns for our legibility)...
