I have got a large iso file of a movie, having a size of about 7.2 GB. How can I burn it in DVD format on a single
playable disk? If this is not possible, how can I split it in two parts?
    Thanks!

You can't burn it to a single layer DVD or split it. What you can do is mount it with something like Daemon Tools and then rip that your hard disk. Once it's in your hard drive and no longer in ISO format you can either shrink it to single layer size with something like DVDShrink or you can possibly split it with something like IFOEdit if you know what you are doing. I would recommend using DVDShrink as it can get complicated to split with IFOEdit if you are not very experienced in doing this.

It's been a while since I used DVDShrink, but I just remembered that it might be able to read your ISO file without you having to mount it first. You might try that.

Yep, you can open the iso directly in dvd shrink and split it in the reauthoring mode. http://www.dvdshrink.info/reauthor_basic.php

There is no need to mount the image or extract the contents.

You can open the ISO directly in DVD Shrink to either compress it to fit a single layer dvdr or you can open it in DVDFab platinum & split it across two disc's without any compression.

There are other methods & programs to do this also but these are the easiest ways.

  5. Or simply burn the iso file to a single double layer disc (DVD+R DL).

I've tried to write the ISO on a DVD +R DL with ImgBurn, but it gives the warning that the ISO is not properly prepared to be written on a DL disk...
How can I "prepare" it? Or, the other way, is there any freeware tool to convert the ISO to an AVI without loosing too much quality?

Use IsoBuster >Open Image to see what's in the ISO,if they are DVD files then extract and use build mode in ImgBurn.
DVDShrink can also extract DVD files as was mentioned above.

With DVDShrink I can split the ISO in two and write it to two separated DVDs.
The ISO is already the image of a full DVD, with menu, languages and the usual stuff. I wonder if I can write it directly into a single DL disk.

DVDShrink is a versatile tool, not only can it shrink but it can split and extract.Select DVD-9 in Preferences then output as DVD files.
You can burn it as is but the layer break info is missing, that's why ImgBurn gave you that warning.
Extract the DVD files and use build mode in ImgBurn,it will let you set the layer break.

Thanks! I could write it directly from DVDShrink with DVD-9 preference selected. It plays well on PC, but not on DVD player. I guess it could be a problem of region of the original disk. How can I identify the original region from the ISO file (not ripped by myself) so to set properly the things in DVDShrink?

If you ran it through Shrink there will be no Region Code issues. Maybe a PAL vs, NTSC issue? Do note that DL burning and player compatibility can be tricky. Use Verbatim DL +R booktyped to DVD-ROM.

Get this app and run a VOB through it. It will give you all the details.
