I have used AnyDVDripper to put all my DVDs onto a 5TBexternal drive with the protection removed.

    Now what ?

Following advice on this forum I have decided not to convertthem to WMV files but rather MP4’s.

    But

I have tried running a few through DVDfab and the resultshave been mixed. Some of the films were fine, others ran half way through then the directors commentary started (eventhough I’d taken that off in DVDfab), others had sections missing, on some the language changed repeatedly through the film etc.

I have tried running some films through DVDshrink then Video to Video Converter. All the films worked fine except that, no matter which settings I changed (I tried many, many, different sizes), they all played with a 3” blackborder around them (on a lap top screen), so they will not expand to fill thescreen – the ones that went trough DVDfab did fill the screen (but of coursehad other problems) so I know it's the film that has the problem not the player.

    So what do you suggest?

All I want is to be able to play my films on my laptop (high quality / full screen). File size is not a problem as I have somevery big external hard drives, but if I could reduce them (with loss of quality) it would be a bonus. I don't mind how long the convertion takes for each film.

Thank you if you can suggest anything

Yes - the ripper is part of that.

I would have used it to create the films but I want to take off all the adverts, subtitles, other languages, etc

Try vidcoder or handbrake and convert to mp4 with h264 and see how it looks like. Vidcoder is probably easier for batch encoding all dvd folders/isos.

Then play the DVD and forget about reencoding it. The quality can't get any higher than that and you won't have any more problems with missing sections, changing audio, the movie not filling the screen, or anything else.

Despite AnyDVD's claims....ripped DVD do not always work in DVDShrink anymore.
Having said that....DVDShrink is the easiest program to use to take MOVIE ONLY and pick only the language you need.....and it does not need to "shrink". You say size is no problem....so don't "shrink" the movie. It will come out exactly as it is on the original DVD minus the extra languages.
And whether you shrink the movie or not....I highly doubt that has anything to do with black borders on your laptop. It has to do with the movie's original ratio and how the laptop's player handles it.
Baldrick's suggestion is also VERY good. HandBrake and H264 is very nice....but I still make a habit of removing all of the extra junk from a DVD before I run it through HandBrake. It can't get confused with something(audio or subtitle) that's not there.

When I ran the samples through Video to Video Converter I tried each video size there was in the setting, to see if it made any difference.
I went right up to 1920:1200 (which created a "very" big file) and this made no difference the film still played in the center of the screen and would not expand to fit.
I like Video to Video Converter as it's very simple to use and works really well, IF I could get the film to expand to fit the screen

Not really. I just wanted to see if I had set the setting wrong and the only way to do this is to try different settings.

Mind you, I'm sure I'm doing something wrong as I don't think everyone will hve the same problem. But it's got me stumpted, I honestly don't know what I've done to reduce the film height/width

Will Handbrake join the files together to make the film when it outputs?

If you use Handbrake correctly there will only be 1 output file. A DVD consists of VOB files, IFO files and BUP files. You aren't supposed to treat these as individual files. As a whole they make up a DVD. To convert a DVD in Handbrake, when you click on the Source button you select Folder, not Video file. Then you navigate to the folder on your hard drive that contains the VIDEO_TS folder, or you can navigate inside the VIDEO_TS folder itself it doesn't matter. Then Handbrake will select the longest movie and convert that as a whole movie. There may be multiple audio tracks, e.g. foreign languages, commentary tracks, there may also be multiple subtitle tracks. You need to select the Audio tab and/or subtitle tab and add/remove as necessary.
