Hi there, i am googling for 4 days now and i am really really exausted in search of a dvd player for up to 60$....

anyway the problem i find the most common is that dvd players tend to show subtitles in small size so they are barely readable....i was using philips dvp 5990/12 for 5 years now and it is awesome....i installed custom firmware on day one and i could choose colour size and whatever i want on subtiltes with it ....i moved and i left that player to my brother and now i wanna buy 1 for myself.....

The things i need is that it has scart, usb and can read most of divx files....i am not expecting any miracles just a solid dvd player that has normal or adjustable subtitle size with a "cheap" price.....if someone can help me out here i would be more than gratefull

    ty all

p.s. i was just about to buy this one http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/45/6/222/DV-2022/page.html but then i found it also has too small of a subtitle .....

It has been my limited experience that if your subtitles are in SRT format that they usually don't display too small on anything. I've had good luck with Philips DVD players and you did too so maybe another Philips will be a good idea. I'm sorry but as I live in the USA I don't know what current models Philips sells in Europe.

How do you define 'normal subtitle size' ?

These are authored for the dvd and stand-alone players can not AFAIK change the size.

You mentioned your previous player but the magic word here is 'custom'. Something you ins6tall at your own risk and not supported by the manufacturer.

If you need to alter the size of subtitles I think the only way is to rip the dvd, extract the subtitles, author a Divx etc and external subtitles and use PC software or a media player such as WDLive to change the size.

Kokolo65 - You have to take some responsibility for solving your own problem here.

I told you that SRT files usually don't display too small. Now if you are insisting on using ASS or some other format, yes, you may have problems. I don't know of any DVD player that will let you change the size of subtitles.

I also told you that Philips makes players that should be OK for your needs. Why don't you take a sample file with you on disc or USB flash drive and go to a store and try the file there to see what happens? You've told us nothing about what subtitle format you are using. Again, if you aren't using SRT, you may have problems.

I am not insisting on anythin i just wanna get advice on what to buy.

I have a dvd that can change size of subtitles...its with a custom firmware....but since a random guy can easily make custom firmware that can do it i thought there might be some companies that are happy to do it in original firmware....

As far as the sample size i called few of the dealers and they doesnt seem to willing to hook up the dvd for me to try it out....i am from croatia and we have pretty bad customer service in this type of situations i am afraid....

p.s. you ssaid your self from your "limited experience" ....i am looking for second opinions aswell and all of the sudden you are expert it seems

  8. My LG player lets me change it. See, subtitles are now I guess digital, so you can select just how you wish them to show up, assuming your have a digital TV.... flashing, bigger, in green etc. My player also accepts apps & games, Netflix with captions that show up now by themselves without selecting. So cool of Netflix to put that feature on.

Or use Subtitle Workshop & make them bigger yourself.
