  1. Hello,
I a complete newbie but I want to know what's going on...
I have two widescreen camcorders (one sony and one panasonic). They are both enabled fot 16:9 (widescreen) recording...
When I capture the video's with pinnacle studio12 it shows a nice, widescreen picture... no problem.
However, when i playback the captured video in another app. the picture is stretched to 4:3.
The DV AVI that's captured has a size of 720x576, which is 4:3 but is shown in Pinnacle12 as widescreen (720*480?) which is OK

After copying the DV a have to resize to 720:480 to get normal, round faces if i want to play the AVI on another media-player.

What's the theory behind this? Why does pinacle show 16:9 instead of the "real" 4:3???

    Thnx Jan

miniDV cams that record in 16/9 use a flag to signal the pixel shape as both 4:3 and 16/9 are recorded in the same 720x576 if it's pal. if you do the math, 720x576 isn't 4:3 or 16/9. the pixel aspect ratio has to be set to make it either. not all video players can determine what the aspect ratio flag should be. some you need to set manually. if you were to render the 16/9 DVavi to a square pixel format like mp4 then the size would need to be set to 1024x576.

No, DV is only 720x576(PAL) or 720x480(NTSC) with either 4:3 or 16:19 display aspect ratio.

So when you play a 720x576 with 16:19 aspect ratio the player should resize it to 16:9 BUT some applications/players ignores the aspect ratio in dvavi/avi files. Then you have to resize and convert it to another format like convert to avi xvid/divx in a 16:9 square pixel resolution like 640x360 (width/height=1.7777).

hey bald one, you might want to edit the ntsc/pal comment. you have it backwards.

  5. Thanks!
I've been experimenting with some small clips, in order to save time and I found it out.
I found out that do not have to resize (with Divx 6.x.pro) but i can tell the program that the input file is 4:3 and the output has to be 16:9
After that, the result was fine!

And, about the NTSC/PAL: Aedipuss is right...
    I'm from the Netherlands, Netherlands=PAL, PAL =720*576

Not at all clear how pinnacle studio12 got you from wide 720x576 wide to 720x480.
