    [SOLVED] 2012-11-22, i uninstalled sp3 back to sp2

this has been driving me crazy. i'm trying to resolve my advc and firewire issues under xp home sp3.

and there is this strange thing going on that i never seen before.

for instance, when i replace an old file (ie avc.sys) it replaced back the older or last version. so, i tried to delete and paste the file as fast as lightning and it looks like it took the new file. then all the sudden, and right before my eyes in explorer, the file reverts back to the previous file.

the file i'm trying to replace is: avc.sys, 4/14/2008 12:16am

note, there are other files with the same situation. perhaps this is why i can't resolve my firewire issues.

    thanks in advance.

If that is a part of a driver install, you have to actually install that version of the driver, instead of just copying files
    into the driver directory.

Yeah, it's Windows' System File Protection/Windows File Protection routines, which tries to keep system files from being corrupted/overwritten, by installs, malware, etc.

As davexnet mentions, best to install the files properly, rather than try to get around (or disable) Windows' protection routines, by copying the files into Windows' system directories. Save yourself a few headaches.

But if you want to permanently delete the stubborn files anyway, first goto the folder system32\dllcache and manually delete the compressed backup copies. A stupid / useless /annoying pop-up window will appear soon, and you can close it safely.

unfortunately, i'm past that point. i've tried and tried and tried so many times going that route to get my advc to work, but no go. there is nothing else left to do in these extream cases. canapus is dead, and other site, grassy valley is full of people like me who never got there advc to work because they can't figure it out either. so i have to resort to hacking around different files.

as i mentioned earlier, this is the first time this happend. so, it must be related to the sp3 i recently installed this week. i think i will revert back to sp2 since sp3 didn't resolve my advc/firewire issues. at least in sp2, i can attempt to hack some things together to get them to work.

last question, is it possible to revert back to sp2 w/out hassel ?
i do not have system restore turned on. i forgot to activate that when i installed sp3.

    thank you.

i've tried that el's, but that did't work. it is caching the files. anyway. it seems to be related to my recently installed sp3. i'm gonna revert back to sp2 if possible. plus, that will give me back the 550mb of hdd space it took from me.

According to this post the ADVC300 doesn't need any special drivers, just the OHCI drivers
    included with Windows:

Hummm, probably the setup files have copied themselves to elsewhere. I remember some ancient Creative bloatware copied their own setup files to %windir%\Temp

it seems to be related to my recently installed sp3.
    Very-unlikely --- I may be wrong, though.

If you have/find the time to, create a custom XP installation CD with nLite, so you can slipstream SP3 and various other updates (Internet Explorer 8, selected Hotfixes, whatever).
