Hi, I've got some DVDs that a family member made (personal stuff), but there's some video problems at the bottom of the screen. Is it possible to crop the files (VOB) without converting to a different format? Also, I've got some old videos transfered to VOB format, and one has a thin line going through the screen at one point, is it possible to edit this out, again, hopefully without converting into a different format?

    Thanks, Cyan.

One of the best to edit VOB files (At least in my opinion) is MPEG Video Wizard by Womble Also Ulead makes several products that edit VOB files and are very easy good quality too. I believe both will let you crop your video too.

What I like about the programs is that they will only recompress video if you change something e.g. add a transition. Cropping may require re-encoding since what you would have to do is crop the image then scale it back up to DVD resolution.

    Good Luck

Yep, cropping requires reencoding/reconverting. But if you play the dvd on a tv you probably wont see the lines because of overscan.

That's a point. Never thought of trying to view them on my TV's DVD Player... Thanks for that.

But, is there anyway to remove the other problem? I've heard of logo removers and the such, which will take parts from around the image to make it look normal. In this case, couldn't I just pull over the sides of the line?

If so, what sort of utilities would I need? And what video formats is it possible to do in (VOB, MPG, etc...)

    Thanks, Cyan.

If you must remove the noise, do it by overlaying a border around the image. That way you won't have to resize. Avisynth is possibly the best, although not the easiest, way to do this.

I know it's a lot of time but if you search "crop vob files" on google you find this thread. So it's a good idea to update it from time to time - IMO.

I just tried Chopper XP but it doesn't work. Can't even load the VOB file.
Then I tried Mpg2Cut2 and it works very well. I hope that helps

It doesn't. If you had read the thread you'd know it was about removing parts of a frame (... but there's some video problems at the bottom of the screen. Is it possible to crop the files (VOB) without converting to a different format?). That's called 'cropping'. You posted a well known way to cut out parts of a VOB file for further use. That's more akin to 'editing'.

And then later the guy did ask about cutting out a section from the DVD (...and one has a thin line going through the screen at one point, is it possible to edit this out...). But what you used (MPEG2Cut2) can't be used for that purpose. You can't just cut a piece from a VOB and then reinsert it back into the DVD. Something like VobBlanker is the tool for that.
