  1. What capture cards (or graphics cards with video in) can do full NTSC 720x480 @ 29.97 fps captures using huffyuv for lossless encoding (Street price under $800).

From what I can gather, the AIW might be able to do it but needs a patched driver (an the link to that on cinax.com seems broken).

The specs for the ASUS videa cards say they can only do 702x480.

Sounds like the Pinnacle DV500+ can do this, but the card sounds a little flaky (or at least lots of people have trouble setting it up).

A combination like the Canopus DVRaptor plus the ACDV100 (or the Hollywood DV converter) could work, except I don't want DV compressed video.

Any other possibilities? What is the best choice in this price range for highest quality captures? Thanks for your advice!

  2. Please state a specific "not-to-exceed" budget amount.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

He says it in his opening question I think.

I'm capturing full NTSC video (720x480 @ 29.97) on an ATI AIW Radeon. (regular 32MEG Radeon, the Radeon 7500, 8500 etc lines are even better)

I'm using VirtualDub with huffyyuv and on my P4 I may drop 12 frames every 24 minutes of video. These are STOCK drivers, right off the ATI website.

It's a great option since the video card is good too.

    Regards,

    Savant

Sorry, I "buried" the budget I had in mind further into my post rather than stating it up front. I wanted to compare solutions that were under $800 (but would not mind considering ones under $400!) (actual prices).

  6. The Visiontek Xtasy Everything does a good job for me (<$200). I use it with Virtualdub and capture raw .avi at 720x480 with no dropped frames on an Athlon XP 1700+ system I built. It's o.k. for the casual gamer too as long as you don't need GeForce3 or 4's performance.

So he did! My mistake for not reading further.

The video capture card is only 1/3 the battle,... another 1/3rd is a very good CPU system (and operating system). The last 1/3rd is the energy and time you will need to "Tune" that system to your Capture card so it will work Properly. Once you have all of this,... Welcome to the Capture Club.

If you want a "Taste" of what some of the 1/3 is all about, look in the User Guides section of VCD Forums for a post I make called "How to Tune your system for ATI Capture"

Just reading all the things that can go wrong and do go wrong will give you a better understand of what you are about to "Step Into".
