  1. I'm a nebie to this so please excuse me if I've overlooked something basic. I can' t seem to get TMPGEnc to convert to widescreen with a widescreen film. It always "stretches" the aspect ratio to a full verticle image...Here's the part I don't get: I have tried EVERY input source setting from the "1:1VGA" right down to the bottom (4:3, 16:9 etc, etc.) with the exception of the PAL settings). None seem to make a difference. I am using smartripper and dvd2avi, both of which recognize the 16:9 format. I have also burned a few SVCD samples to see if it is widescreen on my home DVD/ TV setup, but the final product is always a stretched image...

    Please help!

  2. first off....dvd2avi tells you the source aspect ratio to enter into tmpgenc..

widescreen movies can be either 4:3 525 line NTSC or 16:9 525 line NTSC....however, full screen movies have to be 4:3 525 line NTSC

also....do you get the scretched images on your computer also?

if it only occurs while you're watching on your standalone dvd player..it could be u need to change the settings on the dvd player....i think the defult is for 16:9 widescreen TVs...but most of us still have the 4:3 TVs

  3. Yes, thats the part that has me baffled. DVD2AVI says 16:9, so thats what I tried. I also tried every other setting! All resulted in the vertically streched image both on my computer (during the "preview" and also while using media player) and home DVD player.

I think I may be missing something simple, but I've played with almost every setting I can find to no avail. Very frustrating!

  4. simmons3d, how about the settings on your standalone dvd player?

there's usually a setting that u need to indicate what type of TV you have...either the standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 TVs

First, do what "poopyhead" suggested and check your dvd player settings.

If that still does not work, make sure your TMPGenc settings are as such: 1:1 (VGA), Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) NOT Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2). That should work. . I've used DVD2AVI and TMPGenc in tandem and have had no such problems.

  6. in the Advance tab:

Make sure the source aspect ratio is set to 16:9.
Make sure the Video arrange method is set to Full screen (keep aspect ratio)

Again, I strongly suggest you use DVD2SVCD to rip dvd`s to SVCD, especially if your a noob. Dont be intimidated by its numerous settings, it will be 95% set after you install it. Just make sure you set the encode tab to tell it where TMPGEnc is.

  7. Success!!! Thanks you guys... I thought I had tried that combo (16:9 and full screen keep aspect ratio), but I did it again and voila - its widescreen.

    Thanks again!

What problem did you find with "keep aspect ratio 2" ?
I'm using it and I don't find any difference with "keep aspect ratio".
Far as I know, there is non context help about it to explain the difference between the "keep" and the "keep 2".

Did you find some problems o information about it ?

  9. Giuliano, the difference is when playing in media player...i believe keep aspect ratio 2 will add black bars while you're playing it in mplayer...but 'm not sure...it could be the other way around
