  1. Hey guys. I am a bit new to the conversion scene so any help would be great. I got a little ahead of myself trying to do some encoding, conversion etc on my own and now i am left with a movie that won't play on my xbox 360. I converted it to avi already but i may have missed something since it still will not work.

I have downloaded many of the free converters and codec packs necessary from the tips and site links on this website but i am now unsure what program and conversion type to use to get my ripped/converted movie playing. I know some conversions take long time so i can be patient. Here are my details and and any advice that will help me get this thing running on my 360 (without losing too much quality) would be awesome !! If you could also point out what may be the culprit of the current file not working on my 360 that would be great!! That way i keep learning more and more myself on what issues i may be having when ripping a movie and then trying to convert it to store on my external drives without screwing things up so much lol.

Just choose a xbox 360 profile in handbrake, freemake video converter, etc. and convert.

  3. Wow as simple as that? I wish i would have come here first instead of fiddling with this last movie i ripped for the last 24 hours LOL. Most times i can rip and convert fine on my own but this one had me stumped LOL (probably my own fault for converting it into different formats before coming here. Ok let me give handbrake a try and thank you Baldrick

Not sure which profile would work best for 360 in handbrake though. On the right hand side i don't have a specific preset for xbox but maybe i am missing something? I just want to make sure i dont convert this again and it doesnt work lol.

I just went with normal under the "Regular" preset. I figure simple is the best lol

OKey. They have no xbox profiles. . But Presets->Regular->Normal should work fine in handbrake.

As far as I know the 360 can't handle avc mpeg 4 video (at least not the times I've tried it on mine - the ps3 can not the 360). I believe there are "mpeg4" options. You should use that instead of avc.

---- I just checked - under the video tab use MPEG4 not h264 and you should be ok for the xbox 360. I don't believe the 360 handles h264 like the ps3 does. At least not in my tests but I may not have done it properly. But the 360 does play mp4 and divx and xvid I just don't think it likes h264.

It supports h264 up to baseline and level 4.1 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945416

But I guess avi with xvid or wmv works a bit better. It's a kinda crappy media player though.

Thanks baldrick. Maybe the encodes I had tested on it weren't to spec than. I might try again and see if I get a profile for both the 360 and ps3 - though I don't really have to since I have a wdtv media player - but good to know.

Yes its not the best media player but if you own one and don't want to or can't buy a dedicated media player this CAN work.

  8. Thanks a lot for the info so far guys. I think i made a mistake though in my encoding and conversion. Handbrake converted the video file to m4v which the xbox won't recognize. If i play it using nero showtime on my pc it works great. But i only had 2 options under file container: MP4 or M4V. I suppose i was to choose mp4 and then once converted change the file extension manually to avi to play on the xbox? The audio of this file is fine for xbox though?

Also do i have to change anything else then or i am ok once i put this back into an mp4 container? I am assuming my mistake was throwing it into an M4V container?

HOLD THE SHIP !!!! I tried streaming the M4V container and it did not work however once i put it onto my external drive and played it, it works fine lol. Stupid xbox, i am very ready to just buy a stand alone media player at this point lol. The xbox works great to some extent when i want to play most of my dvd rips if they dont have alot of advanced codecs, but i am finding its a lot tougher to get it perfect when ripping my blu rays for conversion and back up purposes. But i should not complain i guess, since blu rays are meant to play on blu ray players so i guess not everything can go my way lol.

The video is great for my ripped movie but the audio is about 2 - 10ths of a second off. No biggie, i am still happy to be able to rip these and have them stored forever without the fear of wrecking any more dvd's and in turn wasting more money. So thanks guys and it did work !! Now if i could only figure out why the sound is a touch out of sync

Also can any of you tell me definitively why certain movies have no problem playing through external drives or usb but will not stream? I assume its a streaming issue due to windows or microsoft that does not exist once transferred to external devices?
