Hi folks. I'm just looking for a way to rip my DVDs to whatever format, no matter how large the file is, that will stream to a PS3 and Xbox 360 that will be lossless. Prefer 5.1 but will deal with 2.0 if necesary. Is there any format that works for both? This seems like something simple but I haven't found a way yet. Thanks in advance.

  2. Ripping to .MPG or .VOB will be "lossless" as you aren't converting anything, you will be using the original streams.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 can handle MPG or VOB, but the Xbox 360 can only handle it in Media Center mode, not when streamed to the dashboard.

It should be possible to set up basic media sharing to the PS3 and set up the 360 as a media center extender on the same PC.

Interesting. I thought VOB was a couple different files if you ripped it. What program do you use to do this? Thanks.

A "rip" of a DVD is an exact copy.
If you want one giant MPEG file out of the VOB files, use Vob2Mpeg AFTER you rip the DVD to your hard drive. Vob2Mpeg has no copy protection removal. You may also want to reauthor the rip, leaving only one audio stream.

I dont' really care what kind of files they are as long as they are lossless video (audio if possible) and work with a ps3 and xbox.

Yes to mpg but not vob. And I don't know if it will handle hd mpg - dvd mode mpg I am pretty sure it should see no problem - it handles m2ts just fine.

The 360 can't handle mpg that I'm aware of though I haven't tried recently.

What it can handle natively is divx and possibly xvid (though not the more exotic variants). AND IT CAN HANDLE WMV just fine. If you encode to wmv you can stream it in anything and the 360 will see it.

What you should do is rip however you want and stream with tversity or playon (the file only local stream mode of playon is free - the integrated hulu/amazon stuff is subscription based). Than you can keep it in its original format on the pc and stream with the software doing the transcoding. Tversity works just fine with both ps3 and the 360 (I have both systems and have used tversity on both).

Lossless video is a tricky one. I can't offer suggestions on that at the moment......

PS3 Media Server will also serve to both the PS3 and Xbox, and happily sends mpeg-2 video, even over wireless-G networks.
