  1. Hi Everyone,

I have a movie in XVID and i have also the subtitles for it.

I want to convert this movie to a DVD, in the begin of the DVD i want a menu like follows:

    > Play Movie

    > Chapter Menu > Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 - Chapter 6

    > Subtitles > On - Off

With which (free) program can i do this ?

If you use a one-click tool then you get a very limited number of menu options. If you want a specific structure then you need to learn how to author manually.

Depends on how lazy you are I guess.
    About DVD Flick

DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation.
    Features

    • Burn near any video file to DVD
    • Support for over 45 file formats
    • Support for over 60 video codecs
    • Support for over 40 audio codecs
    • Easily add a menu
    • Add your own subtitles

I can add subtitles and menu with DVDFLICK but like i said it does not render the menu the way i want. The menu structure i want is like this:

    > Play Movie

    > Chapter Menu > Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 - Chapter 6

    > Subtitles > On - Off

Thus 1 main menu and a sub-menu for the 6 chapters.

I tried also AVI2DVD, however that one does not generate a sub-menu for the chapters.

Womble Easy DVD (trial is fully functionable) works fine with menu but it does not support subtitles.

Paas on if you know a program...

Too complicated program (also does not support avi), i need something in style of DVDFLICK, WOMBLE EASY DVD, TMPGEnc DVD Author, DVD Lab. Simple selectable menu, background, buttons, text changeable.

  10. I just tried DVD Styler i can get as far as getting on the main menu the options

    > Play Movie
    > Chapter Menu

The ''Chapter Menu'' is linked to a 2nd menu where the chapters are.

How can i get on the mainmenu a third option:

    > Subtitles ON/OFF

    Does someone know that ?

  11. I don't believe the DVDAuthor-based freebies (DVD Styler, DVDAuthorGUI, GUI4DVDAuthor) make it easy to set up a subtitle menu. You'd most likely have to edit the XML file. But I haven't used GfD, and maybe AlanHK knows better.

Me, I make the subs play by default and if someone doesn't like them they can turn them off using the remote control. What's the big deal about a subtitle menu?

No pure authoring program supports AVI. Their job is to author and not convert from AVI to DVD Video. It's your job to feed them already compliant assets (video, audio, subs). And it's the 'complicated' ones that are more likely to allow the setup of a Subtitle Menu. 'Simple' usually means no Subs Menu.

You can make subtitle menus and buttons in GfD's GUI : http://download.videohelp.com/gfd/Help/FreeDefinedButtons.html
That tells you the commands to paste in to activate subtitles.

Similar here; I just make the subs default on or off, and let the viewer use the remote to cycle them. Much simpler for everyone. I hate those DVDs where you are forced to click through 3 menus to find and change subtitles or audio tracks.

Yes, it would be a terrible imposition to have to read a manual.

  13. I managed to make with DVD Styler a menu with in the mainmenu: ''Subtitles ON/OFF''

The only thing if you select ON then it will play rightaway the movie with subtitles, and if you select OFF it will play rightaway the movie without subtitles. On official dvd's this function one choose only keeps selected/underlined/highlighted in the mainmenu and after it you should select ''Play movie''.

    Any solution for this ?

Why do you want to force people to click several times instead of once?

On the official movie dvd menus i saw it is like that. Beside if the ''Subtitle ON/OFF'' function will play it right away, what will be the function of my ''Play Movie'' selection on the menu ?

Commercial DVDs have a lot of annoyances that are not worth emulating. In fact, many rip DVDs simply to avoid this rubbish.

Whatever you've set as the default.
Why worry which button they use?

Just use this, change the labels to "Play" and "Play with subtitles"
