    Hello everybody,
I'm asking because I am a liitle bit confused. I read some threads on this site and in one of them (https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/330954-mpeg2-ts-file-convert-to-mkv-or-mpeg2-ts-cha...-video-bitrate) it is mentioned that for convertion from ts to mkv two programs should be used (tsMuxer and mkvMerge).

Now my question: isn't vDub not enough for this task (I've been using this program for a while and it's been doing its job very good). Are there any advantages showing up from using above two programs or the results are the same?

I got my TS's from hauppauge hd pvr.

    Thanks.

Tsmuxer and mkvmerge are multiplexers, they are just just putting the video and audio in a different container.

run that .ts file through HDConvertToX...takes it to an .mkv if you want...works very well

    you can also use Multiavchd

    thanks for replies.
so it means that final output from all above programs is the same.
in that case I'll stay with vDub - no need to make life more complicated.

    thanks.

    yes it can.

    I downloaded latest version 1.9.11 + this file virtualdub.org/beta/DShowInputDriver-0.5.zip

and I can open everything (i think) and save to mkv using ffdshow.

  7. Does it remux or does it recompress? Remuxing is the process of taking the compressed audio and video streams and repackaging them. There is no loss of quality because the audio and video aren't changed at all. And the process is very fast. Recompressing will reduce the quality and take much longer.

ok so vDub makes recompressing. But there is an option direct strem copy under VIDEO and AUDIO so in that case it'll do remuxing - am I right (I'm just thinking very fast now)

ok - now I get it - i cannot use vDub because it doesn't have h.264 - it has only mp4 as xvid, divix but not h.264 - I've been using this for a while thinkink I was encoding with h.264 - OMG

well, seems there is still a lot of things I have to learn

    Thanks jagabo.

Yes, but when using the directshow source plugin VirtualDub gets uncompressed frames from Directshow. Direct Stream Copying that into an MKV file will give you enormous files -- 20 to 50 times bigger than your source.

TsRemux can take that .ts and demux it into the avc and separate audio file...take that audio and video file and use mkvmerge to create an mkv to not lose any quality

ok guys, you helped me a lot - now I can see a difference

  13. If you set your HD PVR to save as MP4 files you can remux directly from MP4 to MKV with MKVMerge.

    correction to post #9.
ffdshow can compress with h.264 - I just looked on the wrong computer - that's why I couldn't find h.264 (very old ffdshow installed)

Unless you're going to recompress the file then you need to get away from Virtualdub. If you're going to recompress (crop, cut out commercials, resize etc) then you can use Virtualdub but using ffdshow or x264vfw in an avi container is the wrong way to go. The new virtualdub has an external encoder feature that allows you to use commandline encoders and muxers to encode H264/AAC in an mkv or mp4 container. You can also do ac3 passthrough with the right settings and encoder.

Here are the links to the files and settings you'll need to do this...

    Virtualdub
    http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

    using the external encoder

opening non supported files in Virtualdub with directshow

If you have the Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR then you should think about purchasing Videoredo 4. You can cut all the commercials without having to re-encode the file.

If all you need to do is remux to a different container then all of the advice given from others is the way to go or like Jagabo said, just set the TME software to capture MP4 instead of TS or M2TS.

thanks DarrellS for info - it took me a lot of time to read all of this.

And that program Videoredo is really impressive - already purchased it, waiting for activation.

  18. Does VideoRedo fully support h.264 yet? I thought it was still in beta.
