    Hi all,

I have an MPEG4/AVC video file (see MediaInfo below), and would like to replace its audio with a PCM track. I normally use TMPGenc DVDAuthor, but unable in this case. I see tons of software to convert from VOB to other formats, and it makes more sense than what I want, but in this particular case, I want better audio and not lose video quality by reencoding video.

If anybody has advice, I'd be grateful!

    FILE
    Format: MPEG-4
Format profile: Base Media / Version 2
    Codec ID: mp42
    File size: 128 MiB

    VIDEO
    ID: 2
    Format: AVC
    Format/Info: Advanced Video Codec
    Format profile: High@L3.0
    Format settings, CABAC: No
    Format settings, ReFrames: 4 frames
    Codec ID: avc1
    Codec ID/Info: Advanced Video Coding

Assuming MP4 can have a PCM audio track, you want to use MP4Box or YAMB to do this. No conversion required, as you are simply changing the contents of the container. I don't know where you think VOBs fit into this process.

Thanks for your reply, guns1inger! I just thought of outputting a VOB file because the AVC file is a music video, and most of them on my hard drive are in that format, and that or MPEG2 are the formats TMPGenc DVDAuthor allows (I haven't used other software to just replace audio). If you have any suggestions as to converting to another format without further loss of video quality, I'd be grateful.

If you want it in a DVD ready format then yes, you will have to convert the file. However converting to a VOB on it's own is not recommended. Mpeg-2 is the video format for DVD, VOBs should be produced as the result of a proper authoring process.

However if you just want to change the audio in your current file and play it back from your PC then you don't need to go through these extra (and potentially quality reducing) steps.

I play the files on a networked media tank, so no need for a standard DVD structure. So YAMB would be an alternative in that case, correct? (assuming PCM will be allowed, if not, I will convert audio to AAC or any other possible format with as little quality loss as possible).

YAMB (and mp4box - YAMB is just a GUI) are all you need.
