Hey everyone! I'm trying to convert a bunch of DVDs to divx (or xvid) AVI format. I understand the vast amount of tools and guides there are in order to make these rips. I, however, have not been getting the results I wanted after following the guides...
I've tried many programs already...
AutoGK
GordianKnot
VobSub
Sony Vegas
and a whole host of other programs. I keep getting pixelated images and/or audio/video synching issues. What am I doing wrong? Most of these programs produce the same output (crap) but just have nice GUIs. I notice that all guides on how to rip DVD to divx AVI files showcase how to rip a standard movie. Does it matter that my disc is a DVD9 (dual layer) that contains about 2 hours and 43 minutes of video on one disc? How do I achieve good quality, divx encodes? My goal here is to have a reasonably sized video file with good digital quality (no pixelated images or audio/video synching problems).
I mean, there's obvious good rips out there. Take ripping groups like aXXo or SAiNTS for instance. They can make great DVD rips that are around 700 mb. The standard length of their rips are an hour and a half. By this ratio, I should be able to make a quality rip of a 2 hour and 43 minute video into about 1.3 GB. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

How bit your final Divx/Xvid file needs to be depends a lot on the nature of the source. Just because one 90 minute movie looks good at 700MB doesn't mean another will.
Try Xvid4PSP as a fairly easy way to convert DVD rips to Xvid AVI. Try one of the Xvid HQ modes (single pass target quantizer).
