Formatting dual layer DVDs before recording?

I know you format a DVD before recording but I am new to dual layer DVDs. I can't find info to tell me if you format the latter and if so how it is done?

DVD+RW and DVD-RW and DVD-RAM ... are formated to be used in a table top DVD Recorder ... but a Dual Layer DVD ... uh uh.

You may have got confused and heard Dual Layer DVD Format .... and thought you were hearing / seeing ... format Dual Layer DVDs.

The Dual Layer DVDs I use are made my Verbatim and I have used also Ritek Ridata ... no formatting involved. Just put one in your burner ... in your PC and use the software you trust to burn it correctly ... Imgburn ... is what I hear alot of people use. It's the Layer Break in Dual Layer DVDs that can be picky and get messed up if not done right.

I also use ... Cyberlink Power2Go and Cyberlink PowerDVD Copy. So far they play just fine.

If Dual Layer Rewritable DVD disks exist ... then maybe they would be formatted ... but they would be expensive

Actually contrary to what you believe newer dvd recorders do not need to format any disc (except possibly dvd-ram) before recording to it.. merely erasing previously written- to discs.*. your discs may need to be finalised tho AFTER recording.

*dvd+/-R cannot of course be erased

Hard drives need formatting, and packet writing software needs to format re-writable discs on a pC

what made you ask the question, were you having problems reording to such discs?
