    Hey

My original file is .mov, I converted it to .mpg to make it playable on DVD players. The problem is, the ratio is 4:3 instead of 16:9. I know that you can change the settings on your TV/DVD player, but it's extremely important that the video is automatically played in 16:9. I've read that you can "force" your DVD player to play it in 16:9 if you have the VIDEO TS file, which I don't have - as I said, I only have a mov or mpg file. Is that possible? Thanks a lot!

Your DVD authoring software should allow you to set the anamorphic flag, which gets multiplexed in the audio and video stream of the .vob file. In DVD Studio Pro, this is done in a track's settings.

If the MOV and MPG have 4:3 aspect ratio and 'normal display' (i.e not tall and compressed), then you would need to cut off some of the top and bottom to make it 16:9, then enlarge it/zoom in to fill the original height again.
    What is your conversion software?

    Thanks for your replies!

I used a program called Burn to convert the mov file to mpg, which I then burned on a empty DVD. (So I don't have a vob file). It's a very simply program... Apart from that I only have iMovie, iDVD, QuickTime, VLC and ffmpegX.

@Case the problem is, I can't just cut parts off... also, when I view it with VLC and set it to 16:9 it works fine, the problem is, that it's not automatically set to 16:9.

I see. If I understand you correctly, the MOV file is 16:9, and the converted MPEG is deformed to 4:3?

There are some shareware and payware apps that do this with a nice GUI.
    However, here's a free solution:
Open the MPG file in HexEdit.
Set "Use Overwrite mode" in the Options menu.
Find and Replace "0x000001B32D01E024" with "0x000001B32D01E034" (without the quotes). Replace All.
    Save as a new file.
    Check if it's 16:9 now.

    For DVD, iPad, HD, connected TV, … iMovie & FCPX? MovieConverter-Studio 3 (01/24/2015) - Handle your camcorder's videos? even in 60p or 60i? do a slow-motion? MovieCam.

I think MPEG Streamclip can convert mov to mpeg2 and keep the aspect ratio.
    It's worth a try.
