  1. In a cosmic irony, the DVR works just fine! But without the remote, I can't bring up the title list or do much of anything else (the buttons on the front panel let me manually record and play back the most recent title, but that's it).

According to Philips, the replacement part for the IR receiver window is discontinued. I can't find any as-is models on Ebay to get that part.

Can I get the programs off the hard drive somehow? Thanks!

Is it possible that your DVDR is configured as DVDR #2 instead of DVDR #1 ??? Some models provide such a feature to avoid clashes with other remote controls.

Have you confirmed that your remote is working? You can aim it at the lens of a digital camera and observe the flashes in the LCD viewfinder.

If the IR receiver is indeed faulty, can you remove it and provide a photo? IME, most IR receivers are 3-pin devices with +5V, Ground, and Signal Output pins. The most common frequency is 38kHz. If yours is one of these, then you should be able to adapt a sensor from any scrap AV device, eg TV, VCR, DVD, etc.

  3. Thank you, Ozzie pal! The remote does work! I'm sending your advice to my local tech guy (I can't even open the case myself!)
