  1. Hi, I just bought a BluRay DVD player but it's not as good as a thought it'd be. I'm trying to play movies from the USB port but there's no fast forward or rewind function. Is this something common on BRs with USB ports? Most of my movies aren't playing the .srt file either. What to do?

SRT files often need to be named exactly the same as the movie. For example if your movie is named MYMOVIE.AVI then the SRT file needs to be named MYMOVIE.SRT.

Fast forward and rewind should be supported via remote control so I have no idea what you are talking about as your remote control should have buttons for both.

What, exactly, are you trying to play from USB? AVIs? MKVs? MP4s? Ripped DVD or Blu-Rays? AVCHD?

Are the subtitles muxed into what you're trying to play, or are they separate? (And, does your player's manual mention whether or not it supports either method?) Have you tried pressing the Subtitle button on your remote, as not all players begin playing with the subtitles on by default?

Also, what is the name and model of the player?

  4. Hi, I tested: avi files (in a folder the .avi and the .srt with the same name), mkv files and mp4 files. No ripped DVDs. The only movie that worked was an avi file with its srt, so I'm thinking it's a problem with my avi files and not the Player. The manual is confusing because it only mentions functions such as play, stop and pause, or pause a section a go to the other one, but this didn't work in any of the movies I tested. One movie had the .Cam.Xvid.avi name and didn't work. I tried pressing subtitles button in the remote but that doesn't work in USB mode.

Post the name and model number of your player. Someone here may be able to find what it actually does support. (You can also search for your DVD player on VideoHelp's DVD Players list; there might be some information as to what formats it supports there, as well.

DVD players (and BD players, I'm sure) are fairly picky about the encoding of SRT files passed to them. I believe most expect SRTs to be encoded in Unicode, and alphanumeric text only (just English, no double-byte languages, etc.). You can try passing the SRT through Windows' Notepad (save in Unicode/UTF-8), and see if the player recognizes it.

I haven't spent much time working with playing videos on a BD player (or the PS3), but DVD players are typically very picky about the way an AVI is encoded, and it wouldn't surprise me if a number of BD players carried over those restrictions. Just to be safe, you might check this post, and see if anything about the AVIs exceed the restrictions mentioned: Common DivX DVD Players AVI Playback problems!

BD players may also be rather picky about MKVs passed to it (they may have problems with the encoding profile, resolution, DTS audio, among other things), but it depends upon the player. My Sony BD player seems to play most MKVs I've tested against it, while I could never get my Samsung BD player to even recognize there was an MKV on a disc (the firmware update changelog claimed they'd added the ability to play MKV videos, but I never got it to work, before the player helpfully decided to brick itself ). And, of course, the PS3 doesn't play MKVs as-is.

  6. It's a RCA BRD23 but I think I'm gonna return it. 90% of my movies are foreign language, so subtitles are essential. I'm just gonna buy a monitor and plug the computer. Players seem a bit obsolete nowadays. Maybe even the monitor has an USB port. Thanks for your help!!
