Has anyone used any of these mics atop their handycam?
Looking at the Sony ECM-HGZ1 and was curious for using indoors at a school theater, being maybe 30-40 feet away, would this improve the sound pickup and/or will it change the sound quality too much?
Don't need 5.1, but don't want any added "hiss" either.
For those that have used it...any regrets?

I've used similar Sony and Canon hot shoe mics. I don't think this will help much at 30-40 feet. They work OK inside 10 feet or so. Their main advantage is reduction side and rear noise.
More expensive shotguns may help. Youtube has several shotgun mic tests.
