  1. I watched one of my dvds last night and when I hit eject, the tray opened but it was empty. The disc is stuck in the player. Re-opening & re-closing it didn't help (I hoped it would jar itself loose & plop back into the tray), and letting it sit overnight in the hopes it would loosen itself didn't help either.

Any suggestions on how best to get it out? Its a Philips DVP642 if that helps any.

    Thanks in advance.

Get a screwdriver and take the case off the dvd player. About the only thing I can think of. I had the same thing happen to me once and that was the only way I could get the disc out.

  3. Quite often, the simplest solutions are the best. It worked. But then when I put it back together & tried it out, the dvd got stuck again. The player still works, so I'm just leaving the case on with the screws out.

unless it is a high-grade player, I would just get a new player, such as the Phillips 5990 or equivalent.

It sounds like your player is trashed. Happens at times. I had a old Apex DVD player that shoved a DVD out the back side of the DVD drive where it destroyed the power supply. Lots of smoke and bad sounds. Entertaining, but destroyed the drive and the player. Once the drive mechanism is warped/damaged, not much you can do except replacement as it is likely to do it again. And drive replacement is problematic with most players.

Best removal technique most times is to use a paper clip to open the drive when the drive is powered off. If the disc doesn't come out, then you have to disassemble the player. Most likely the disc is destroyed, but you may be able to extract it. The drive can't be trusted anymore.

  6. Maybe its time to break down & get a Blu-Ray player, especially with the prices so much lower. I know they play standard dvd's, dvd-r's, and cd's, but can they also play .avi's & other formats? That was the reason I got the Philips DVP642 a couple years back, so it could play (virtually) any format.

I threw my Apex on the ground and jumped on it. Didn't cure the problem, but it made me feel a bit better. And I liked the old Apex players as they would play about anything. But life goes on.

I've got you beat. I once threw a VCR off the roof of a 3-story.
