The registry cleaning part of Ccleaner is what I use.
Just BE CAREFUL. You can really screw stuff up if you get over-zealous. Backup the registry, research (Google) what you plan to delete. Realize that cleaning the registry may give you that nice "spring cleaning" feeling, it's actual improvements in terms of PC performance are debatable.
(I do it for that "spring cleaning" feeling)

I like CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) as well.

Just back up the registry when prompted.
On occasion, when I've had to fix friends' computers, it can make a substantial difference. But their computers were just chock-full of crap and they neglected the simplest maintenance. I still think it's a good practice to use CCleaner's reg cleaner from time to time and have never had the slightest trouble as a result. Good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Sweet! thanks a lot. I'm headed over to download now. Also, how often would you suggest doing some "spring cleaning"? lol

Eusing registry cleaner is another good one:

It automatically makes a backup in case something gets screwed up.
I do a registry clean whenever I delete a program. -
Normally, I use it, oh, every few months and it doesn't find much of anything.
An exception is if you've been installing and uninstalling a lot of programs. When I switched to Blu-Ray, I tested many programs and worked out my procedures. At that time, I used the registry cleaner fairly often, and it found a great deal of junk. [shrugs]
[EDIT] MovieGeek beat me to it this time.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Lol, well thanks guys, I did find a lot of junk because of all the program testing I've been doing lately and it should speed my SAS scan up just a bit. (since it scans the junk in your registry)

Another good program to look at is Revo uninstaller. They have a free version thats is perfectly adequate. Use it to uninstall all programs. It has a built-in registry tool that cleans the reg after uninstalling. If you use this you shouldn't have any problems with your registry.

The most safe reg tool to me is ccleaner. it doesn't long to one to delete the wrong keys or files, be very careful.

Thanks MOVIEGEEK. Eusing registry cleaner is working well for me.

I used one a few years ago called something like JVpowertools. I remember it being very easy to use. Oh, it looks like it might be trialware now. But I am sure you can still find the most recent freeware version.
