Suddenly my desktop dell dimennsion 4600 lost sound. I already checked: the volume isn't in mute mode, the external speaker is working, the sound card is still in, there is no internal sound at all. can s.o. help? Thank you.

Go to 'add hardware' in control panel and let Windows re-install your sound card and see if that helps.

Return to the Control Panel, disable the Volume Icon in the system tray,
    reboot the computer.

1: Use head phones to double check issue is with sound device and not speakers ... just because speakers hum dose not mean they are actually working properly

    2: Which OS ?

3: Confirm audio chipset in use > Drivers & Downloads for Dimension 4600

Adi 198x or SB Live 5.1 or SB Live 5.1 24bit or SB Audigy 2 or SoundMax (not listed onsite) ... or actually addon card ?

Check the chipset drivers were installed before audio drivers ... if in doubt simply re-install the chipset driver and reboot

    Then

Control panel > Sound and audio devices > Audio tab

Check playback, recording and midi playback are set to default onboard adi device (soundmax), check the box below, apply, ok, reboot

If in control panel there is something like a sounds effect manager ... go through this and locate speaker configuration and set it to two channel mode for stereo, click ok

I had the same problem once before. Do the following in order.

    1. Restart the PC

    2. While the PC is off, take out the speaker cable

    3. Switch on the PC and then insert the speaker cable into the right connector & then open up the volume control and untick the master volume and wave, raise them both to the middle level.

    4. If that doesnt work, then connect the speaker cable to the 2 other connectors.

    5. If nothing works try using your speaker on another pc or something else e.g. a cd player to see if it works. If no luck, then try a new speaker set.
