  1. I have always used MPEG-1 for coverting files in TMPGenc. I am sampling the MPEG-2 format and really don't know what is the difference between the two. Does it make the transfer look better and what is the advantage between MPEG-1 and MPEG-2

  2. A good place to start is with the Glossary:

Main disadvantage of MPEG1: it doesn't support proper encoding of interlaced video.

mpeg-2 allows for higher bit rates, different profiles, higher resolutions, it can be muxed with ac3 (though it may be possible to mux mpeg-1 with ac3), it provides for more complex encoding parameters, basically if all you are doing is 320x240 at 1mb/s stick with mpeg-1, if you plan on doing dvd and greater resolutions you go with mpeg-2 and there are some that will tell you that hi def should be done with avc (but i'm not one of them).
