I've been trying to stretch the width of this video (see direction of white arrows) to the point where it fills up the colored-in blue space. I was successful at stretching the height one time (I think I used Super) but never the width. Any suggestions?

The reason I'm doing this is because when I try to create a dvd using this file and then play it back on any dvd player, it shows up as having black borders where I want it to stretch to the edges as far as possible.

    thank you

Most good converters I have tried can crop, like convertxtodvd or the free avstodvd. But you will get wrong aspect ratio.

Well, like I said, I am able to stretch the height just not the width. So I'll stretch it only to the point where it looks decent. Thanks, I'll try those.

Is this a joke? If it's in the correct aspect ratio now, any stretching is indecent. The only way to keep the aspect ratio is to crop from the top and bottom and resize. Except then you lose a lot of important picture information (like heads and feet, or those junky looking cartoony things at the top and bottom). Leave it alone.

This is what you want to do:

    and

this is what you *should* do, if you really insist on spoiling the picture:

I doubt the original poster cares. I don't get it, but a rather large number of people are completely unable to recognize that the stretching is unnatural and in fact actually think it looks "better" than a natural resolution with black borders.

uglijimus should note that in DereX888's final picture of a proper stretching while preserving the aspect ratio that some of the image information on the edges is lost. There is no way to avoid these. Either you stretch correctly and lose some of the image or you stretch incorrectly and keep all of the image.

Actually I do care about how the picture looks. I never planned on stretching it to the point where the people's appearance would be distorted. After stretching it vertically, I had planned on stretching it horizontally ONLY to the point where it would still be within a correct aspect ratio.

What I did not know was the difference between stretching and cropping. I thought they would achieve the same result but I was wrong. Cropping is what I did and it came out perfect. Thank you to those who recommended to do so.
