I've posted about this before here i think, but i haven't transferred anything for a while. My setup currently is thus:

    - LG LV880 VCR. Only output is scart.
    - One of these (cheap, no name brand) in the scart socket.
    - Cheap, unbranded RCA cables into that, to the PC.
    - Audio goes into an RCA to 3.5 splitter, again unbranded.
    - The audio goes into my Creative Soundblaster Audigy Se soundcard, and the video into my Winfast TV2000XP Deluxe Analogue Capture Card.

I'm using Virtual Dub as my capture program, with the HuffYUV codec. Now going to the topic question. Even with just my VCR connected and not playing a VHS, the blue screen is not clear, it has light fuzzy interference. I'm therefore assuming the answer is yes, but where would my money be best spent?

I did buy this cable a while ago, but it turned out to be one directional, and the wrong way. Would finding a correct directional calbe like that be better? Or just higher quality, branded, RCA cables that are protected from interference like that cable. Or do i need to go further and look for a better old VHS player?

    Thanks

  2. We need more info:-

How many vhs tapes and how good are they, image and condition wise.

If you want simple get a dvd recorder. PC capture is time consuming , so if you do not mind spending the time its fine, but adaptors are often dodgy, hence the experience you are having.

Your VCR is not the best you could use, what were the tapes recprded on in the first place?

My suggestions are :- also means no need to adapt scart to rca.

There seems to be a shortage of the usual vcr I recommend, the nv930 or NV 960 from panasonic. The tracking is so good

DVD recorder wise its hard, but I use a UK JVC MV 100 if you can find one. I do not know if any current uk dvd recorder does a good job or not, but did find these on ebay:-

looks to be a good buy, the jvc dvd recorders work well with the panny vcr's, so as long as your vhs's are not poor, it should be an easy route.

The tapes are things either recorded from mid ninities TV, or from amateur videos of music gigs, so the quality on them varies greatly. I definitely want to capture to PC because standalones have many problems. MPEG blockiness, lossy AC3 audio, no chance to adjust levels before capture etc etc.

I'll watch that VCR and see what it goes for.
