  1. Hello there people,

I converted an .mkv video file with FAVC and it took about 5 hours to finish. Is this a normal duration for a conversion?
By the way, the file size is 2GB.

I tried ConvertXtoDVD and it was much faster. But the thing is that the codecs that were installed with convertx seemed to cause a problem, because when i opened a folder with video files, the explorer.exe crashed.
I restored to a previous from the installation point, and it was ok.

The dvd seems to have been written well (i used imgburn with TDK dvd), and the quality also seems excellent. But the problem is with the conversion speed...

in my experience favc speed is totally dependant on you processor speed the better the processor the better the speed like i used to have a core 2 duo 6700 encode movies in about 2 to 2 and a half hours but with my quad 1 - 1 and a half hr depending on movie size.

also depends on the encoder you used qenc or henc and settings in them i.e 2pass vbr or constant quant everything matters

convertxtodvd is very fast prolly one of the fastest ive seen but quality seems to suffer maybe when the next version comes out with multipass encoding options it will be better

  3. I guess this 2,6Ghz processor doesn't help a lot...

i used henc, and yeah, i wondered what the heck this 2pass is...

I've selected from the HC Options tab, Optimised Presets -> Speed and i'll try convert with these settings.

Is there any documentation for FAVC? It would help a lot to know what each thing does

If you ran the job on your PC while you sleep, I doubt you would care whether it took 2 hours or 5 hours. Are you one of those people who thinks that they cannot let their PC do anything unless they are awake and watching it every minute?

In two-pass mode, HCenc first processes the file, collecting data on the complexity of each frame. The second pass it actually makes the mpeg, uses the data from the first pass to allocate bits so they total to the selected filesize.
Single pass takes half as long, but it uses a constant quality setting, so the filesize is unknown, though you can guess from experience of similar files after a while.

Most encoders have an option to shut the PC down when they are done, so you can set it going, head off to bed, and find the PC quiet and asleep when you wake in the morning.

FAVC does have a quality based mode, whereby it runs a series of short encodes to try to find an optimum setting, then does a single pass. Mostly this works, although I seem to have been cursed with a run of videos in which FAVC got in to an infinite loop, running the same sample encodes over and over again.

However quality comes at a cost, and the most obvious cost is time/speed. The only antidote is power. My quad core (which is only a base level quad core now, given it's age) can process a standard 90 minute avi file into a DVD in under an hour with AVStoDVD, which uses the same HCEnc encoder.
