FLV Extract seems like a nice tool to split FLV files. I'd been previously using SUPER to convert them to some sort of non-DVD complient mpeg, then sending it thru TMPGEnc (too cumbersome). But FLV Extract extracts to an .avi and a mp3. Here's what the documentation says:

Extracts video and audio from FLV files without decompressing or recompressing. The video is saved to AVI (H.263/FLV1 and VP6/FLV4 are supported) and the audio is saved to MP3.

NOTE: The AVIs will not play unless you have the right decoders. ffdshow contains a decoder for FLV1 and Media Player Classic contains a decoder for FLV4.
is there anyway I can get TMPGEnc Plus to use the right decoder to convert these files? I installed ffdshow and I run MPC, but don't know too much how TMPGEnc environmental 'VFAPI plug-in' section really works. I bumped up 'AVI VFW Compatibility Reader' without any success..

You may have to configure FFDShow's vfw decoders seperately.

Look in your start menu for the FFDSHOW folder. There should be a shortcut that says "Video Decoder Configuration", assuming you have it installed in the first place.

I enabled all the Codecs in the 'supported codecs' section of the ffdshow configuration. H.263+, MP41, MP42, MP43, and 'raw video' weren't checked. No help with TMPGEnc. Some of the extracted .avi's give an 'unsupported' error, and some get recognized as audio.

I've been doing some experiments of my own and it doesn't appear that TMPGEnc will open FLV. I'm not saying it's impossible, just that I'm unaware of any other methods to successfuly perform the task.

If you can play the files without using MPC's internal FLV filter you should be able to get TMPGEnc to work with via AVISynth using the "DirectShowSource" filter to load the AVI in the script like so:

    DirectShowSource("D:\Temp\test1.avi",25)
    ConvertToRGB24()

yes, using avisynth to convert to mpeg is the best method/better quality i found so far, i had to install ffdshow and flv splitter as ffdshow didnt decode some flv files.

Convert flv's with Super?!Total Converter etc?! No thanks

Yep, flv splitter (added to the tools list now), ffdshow with flv1 enabled and avisynth works fine here. I can also open most flvs directly in tmpgenc (directshow reader priority +1).

but how about the new flvs with vp6/7 ?

    Tmpgenc mpeg1 encoded clip: zidane.mpg

    Maybe http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VP7.htm or http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VP6.htm ?

edit: Nope, just audio and no video...

Found an updated FLV splitter, http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/FLVSplitter.7z
and I can now open flv4 after using flv extract in TMPGEnc!

so for both flv1 and flv4

    1. Install ffdshow, enable FLV1
    2. Install flv splitter ( Start->Run regsvr32 c:\location\flvsplitter.ax )
    3. FLV Extract to avi and mp3
    4. Open avi and mp3 in tmpgenc

but how is the flv4 video decoded? has the newer flvsplitter a builtin vp decoder also?

Enable ffdshow to use the tray icon and decode the MP3 in TMPGEnc to see what is decoding the flv4.

I managed to get things working on my end too. Turns out I had the FLV Splitter installed twice. All I had to do was remove one.

Thanks for the tip Baldrick, didnt know that ws possible, never tried because flv is not on filetype list that Tmpgenc can open.

I selected "all files" and to my surprise it worked.

No need for the avisynth script on the few flv's i tried so far.

    Thanks

TMPGEnc will still work much better and faster using AVISynth to Lanczos4Resize and ConvertToRGB24. Also using toolame for MPEG2 audio output is better.

Yeah, I was about to say that my splitter had VP62 decoding enabled. Gabest left it disabled to avoid legal troubles. The decoder isn't even in the svn. Still the offical splitter should still work if you have On2's decoder installed. Just probably with upside down video.

Shouldn't be any need to extract flv's either. TMPGEnc should be able to open them directly.

Needs no explanation really. For flv's it would make no difference. For avi's or anything else supported by VFAPI plugins with a higher default priority it will force opening via dshow. In the options under environmental settings from recollection.

  21. To extract an FLV file in TMPGenc 2.58 or 2.59 (I use)
    1. install fdshow and under video filters set FLV1 to libracodec
    set VP62 to livracodec

    2. install Gabest flvsplitter.ax to windows in system32 directory and right click to register it

    3. place the FLV Input filter from VirtualDub.org in TMPG install directory and rename the file
    ending to *.vfp

    and it works for me
