I have a Sony Xacti which I've recorded 720p MP4 files, and I can't get Premiere Elements 4.0 or Sony Vegas to edit them, I have about 800 files in the project (total 6Gb).
Every time I import them into PE 4 or Vegas the tool crashes.
even thought the files are in HD720p I just really want to burn them to a DVD project in SD, so do I need to transcode them before I import to these Editors?
or why can't these editors support MP4 at this resolution, and which can?

    thanks

You can call Sony (Sanyo?) or Adobe about Xacti support in PE7.

    Which version of Vegas?

    720p at what frame rate?

You can externally decompress and resize your 1280x720p to 720x576p (if 25fps) and import into your old software. Audio may need conversion as well.

Others can suggest software tools other than Virtualdub, AVISynth.

    sorry it is Sanyo Xacti.
    Frame rate is 30fps

I'll try to email Sanyo and/or Adobe.
    thanks

  4. if you want to post a sample at a file sharing site we can see if it works for us. sanyo is known to use oddball formats for their cams so they don't have to pay royalties though.

note PE 4 and vegas are ok if I just import a few clips , but when I start loading more eg 30 or more both programs "spit the dummy"

but I will try and upload a sample somewhere

Premiere Elements 7 works with the H.264 720p output of the cheap Insignia camcorder I have, though sync issues sometime pop up. Ulead Movie Factory 6 also plays with it very nicely and does a very nice job of converting to DVD.

I have downloaded the trial version of PE7 so I will now give that a go, I tried with Premiere CS3 and it didn't support MP4, but since I want a integrated DVD burn, I might stick with PE 7.

I'll also try the Ulead Movie Factory 6..
    thanks

    Note :
I downloaded the Trail version of Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 and it doesn't recognise the MP4 file.

another update, Adobe Premiere 7.0 also crashes, but only after I load about 30 clips.
ie this seems to be some issue with how they manage the library of files rather than the file type.
Note I have about 800 clips in my project I have no idea how to get this to work.

  12. vegas pro 9 works with them ok. i loaded the 4 from your ftp 20 times onto the timeline and it's fine, vegas shouldn't care how many more were added.

in premiere pro did you make your project settings 1280x720p? i seem to recall though that pp cs3 was the first version to support avchd properly. cs4 does for sure. i added your 4 files 20 times and pp cs4 showed no signs of balking no matter how many times i added more.

To think that you would work with these programs, it shows the great length of path that you must still go before you become a true Video Ninja!

But it is alright. Lucky for you, I am here to guide the young Shurikens.
In order to master Video Editing you must use the greater editors, and also have a lavish converting application that will allow you to see which formats work with those editors!
A lot of programs lack native support for many files; you must understand which format can work with which program. This is a wisdom you must learn yourself through painstaking trial and error, and only then will you be strong enough to edit video!!!

My suggestion is that you try the latest suite from Adobe including Premiere and AE. If your video does not work natively on those editors, try finding out which formats you can use - and then use lossless conversion to get your video into the powerful programs.

thanks for looking at the files, I suspect it would work ok if add into timeline as you are essentially not duplicating file, I was adding about 30-50 into the project instead ie 50 different clips.
I suspose you could try and emulate this by copying these 4 files as new names 10 times ie to give you 40 clips.
Then after you have 40 clips import into project and see what the results is..

BTW what RAM did you have, I have 2Gb
    thanks

ROTFLMAO Video Ninja, you are a god among mere men and belong not with the false ninjas of the world...rather with the true authentic Ninjas as their leader and their long-awaited second coming savior
