I have a 1,24 GB avi file and i want to convert it to a mkv maybe or other, but i want to shrink it to maybe 700 MB or less without lossing too much quality, The original file has very poor image quality though the size is huge so i pretty much want to shrink the size and mantain as much as posible the quality, so i started looking for an app and i found RipBot264 but since i have CCCP i can't use it and i don't want to install ffdshow, so is there any other program that can convert to x265 or h264 mkv?

Is ffdshow better than CCCP? Thanks for the recommendations.

Use avidemux if you don't want to install anything. Under Video choose x264. Under Configure and Encoding mode change to Two pass - Video Size and set the size. Under Audio set an audio codec or leave it as copy to just copy and not compress it. Under Format change to mkv. Convert.

Hi Baldrick, When i open the avi video with avidemux it says Packed Bitstream Detected, Do you want to unpack?

What is Packed Bitstream? Should i unpack it or leave it Packed?

    Thanks.

  4. Sorry for the bump but I just found this post (3rd Google for "AVI to x264 MKV" ) and thank you so much, finally a new video converter than doesn't require the very buggy Avisynth or the very M$ish .NET Framework (unlike MeGUI...). The only downside is that there is no contextual help in the x264 codec setting and no 3 pass compression... but that's no big deal, awesome software anyway. Thanks again! (very cunning plan, Baldrick )

Sounds like spam (although without actually identifying the product, it is a pointless and worthless post). FWIW, I have rarely had issues with Avisynth, and would not describe it as buggy.

  6. Well, I've always had problems with Avisynth. When used with Gordian Knot, I manage to fix them, but when used with MeGUI it's horrible... so maybe it's mostly a MeGUI problem, but it's still a problem. Sorry for sounding like spam, but after a few hours of being stuck on my tiny Avisynth script, finally finding this AviDemux saved my day, and I even forgot to reply to the question ^^

Didn't what this is, but unpacking it works fine. Some good explanation there.
