I need to try converting some mkv i have encoded with x264 codec to xvids in .avi container in order to test performance on a standalone player i own that doesnt support x264 encodings and the mkv format.
Of course though, i need the result to be the best possible, (lossy it will be of course due to re-encoding) but i want to retain bitrate resolution and picture quality as much as possible.

Many programs have profiles/presets that maximize compatibility with stand alone players. If you want an easy to use program, try xvid4psp. -
Ok thanx, since i aleady have SUPER that wont be too hard, but is this the best option here? I just want to be sure i get the best results doing this, but i'm cautious since this is an unsual conversion.
Anyway i guess i'll try that for now, but if there's anybody that knows of some way that gives better results, please let me know. -
Just tried i yesterday. Why does it take forever? The encoding rate was 2 fps and the estimated completion was 10-11 hours! Is it really that bad.
My specs were t5200 dual core and 2gb ddr2 on an asus laptop.
BTW i left the hg xvid profile, but did not make any changes. did i have to alter anything before i started with the encoding? -
You probably left the priority as idle. Change it to "normal" if you want it to make use of more CPU cycles / s

It shouldn't take that long if you are not doing any filtering.
Double check the avisynth script (avisynth=>edit filtering script). Sometimes the auto-analyze functions can introduce problems. Post the text here if you are unsure of what it means
Make sure you don't have any other unecessaary processes running, (viruses, virus scan, other apps..etc...) eating up cpu cycles -
Nope i have not enabled any filtering, plus the computer is brand new and it ha not connected to the internet yet so there's no chance of virus either.
Dunno what's wrong though. I eve ntried AutoMKV and it even took long for the field analysis so i interrupted it before it could start encoding.
Maybe it's a VISTA thing. It came with theOS preinstalled nothing i could do. -
"brand new" usually means pre-installed with 16 kinds of software like Norton, Nero and other crappy software that bloats your system. If you didn't install it/build it yourself there's is 100% chance that many bloated apps are on the PC already.
Something is seriously wrong if you get 2fps. One of my 5 year old single core computers would get at least 5-8fps doing the same conversion
Open up taskmanager and look at the processes, see if other things aren't eating up cpu cycles
I'm assuming your mkv plays back correctly in a media player? (ie. no errors?)
You could make your own script and use vdub or megui to encode to xvid/mp3/avi (megui also has a script generator, but it might hang like automkv did). It could be as simple as 1 line, write it in notepad, and change the extension to .avs
DirectShowSource("file.mkv") -
I wont have access to that computer fo another week, but i had already tried taskmanger. It was either ctrfmon or rundll32 with cpu of 45% there rest of the processes were next to zero. IT does have norton and other crap on it.
